I have a ton of regrets about my past. Took too long to finish college, stayed in relationships longer than I should, lost contact with people that would be important for me these days, and 1000 other little things.
I like to bother myself with my mstakes of the past every once and a while, it helps me keep myself awake for the future. Truth is, I'm glad I woke up to these things, although they made me who I am, I still consider a lot of them as mistakes.
But, one thing I can proud myself of is: Once I realized they were mistakes I never did it again. I never repeat those mistakes because I don't want my future self to be bothered by the same things over and over again.
If one day you decide to meditate, make some sessions for dwelling on the past. Feel the pain of your mistakes as if you were poking an old wound, let that pain push you forward. You will eventually feel sad when you realize that old wound doesn't really hurt anymore.

This is wisdom right here. To the teens that wander into this sub, you will stumble, you will fail, but you have to. Taking risks and aiming for your goals, and even failing spectacularly is the only way to live a life free of regret. Scars look cool as hell, but you get them in battle.

When did you finish college at what age?
[–]808scripture 22 points23 points24 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
To avoid the self-deprecation of regret, I always try to remember that my previous self did the best it could for itself in its circumstances. Looking retrospectively like this, and simply trying to learn from one's mistakes, can bring the wisdom one may need to be better prepared for similar circumstances in the future. Don't bash yourself for fucking up with the hottie in the tight skirt, she didn't matter anyway. Don't bash yourself for not hitting the gym enough in college, because there is still time to improve yourself. Gotta focus on the growth of the process, rather than the discrete results of the past.

Absolutely. Guilt and regret are the worst feelings you can get. It's okay to sad or angry every once in a while but you should NEVER feel guilty or ashamed of your past, because like you said, your previous self did the best it could in those circumstances.

No. Sometimes your previous self is just a fucking dumb ass.
[–]The_Other_Sun 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes, however, you can learn without beating yourself up.

I think the same of my past bad choices, but in different words:
"Back then, it was exactly what I needed, and I'd do it again in the same circumstances. If I had tried to do the better thing, I wouldn't've been able to."
[–]vagbutters 9 points10 points11 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I've learned in life that regret is the opium for blue-pill fools who would sulk in pain rather than have the balls to improve their life.
Do I wish that I wasn't raised with shitty habits and never got fat? Sure, it would've saved me about a year from weight loss.
Do I wish that I drank some more milk around puberty to be a few inches taller? Sure, it wouldn't hurt with my SMV.
Do I wish that I made better friends during my teenage years? Sure, beats the feeling of desperation I felt for a while.
Do I wish that I wasn't raised to be a BP mangina by society? Damn right I do.
All of this makes you stronger if you take your life by the reigns and change it. Absolutely nothing comes ruminating on your mistakes. Everything comes from correcting them.
[–]pantsoffire 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm saving that last paragraph, thank you.

All my past mistakes brought me here. 10/10 would Fuck up again. What is dead may never die. Seriously, my life couldn't be better. It would be bad without TRP. Thank you guys.

I recently got into the college of my dreams; will be attending there in the fall. When I got the acceptance letter, my dad told me that there were a lot of things that went wrong when I was growing up (from very very pushy parents to some of my own mistakes).
But you know what he said? "Even if you could go back and change the past, you shouldn't. Every little thing contributed to your story, to the journey that got you here. You never know what 'setback' of yours was required to get here. Never hold any regrets once it's over."

To indulge in rumination is to invite stagnation and depressive states of mind.
The solution is to immerse ourselves in action, rather than wither in despair. Solid post OP.

19 years old, and yeah, I used to have a lot of regrets about mistakes that I made in my life. Not giving up video games until I was 18 & playing them for hours a day when I should have been lifting & partying, being too shy to talk to certain girls in school, getting into stupid fights during my middle school years that got me in a lot of trouble... basically a lot of stupid shit.
I used to dwell on these regrets on a daily basis, until one day, I confided in my dad and he told me this: "Every decision you make is based on the best knowledge you have available at the time. Therefore, you really should have no regrets; you were only doing the best you could."
Once I internalized these thoughts, I never felt regret again. Though sometimes I wonder what could have been had I known then what I know now, when I do, I remember what my dad said, & I immediately let go of that regret & go back into the present moment.
Unless you have a time machine, there's no point dwelling on the past: you can't fix it, you can't change it. On to the next moment.

Fuck adderall, holy shit. Fucking parents weren't content with As and Bs so they drug me up with that shit. Never felt as utterly defeated as when I was on that. I was a walking zombie.

Chronic use of it doesn't really make sense to me. I never took until I was 24 though.
And by take it, I mean I've done it one-off maybe 3x per month for weekend days that I need to crank after a full week's work has been done. For periodic use I actually enjoy it. Never could do it every day though.

Simple wisdom right here. I wish I read a post like this when I first found TRP (more than a year ago). It took me too long to release my pain and stop feeling like a victim. Now I am thankful for every ordeal and every moment of pain. Men are forged in the crucible of adversity and suffering. It is a glorious thing to be a man and worth all of the pain.

Question for OP:
I was diagnosed ADHD at age 6 but never took treatment for it. I have adult ADD at age 23 now. I've been considering getting an Adderall prescription but haven't yet due to tight finances and starting a business.
I now work from home so motivation and discipline is critical. Considering your prior experience with Adderall, would you recommend it for someone like me? The point being, of course, that I am no longer physically or mentally developing in a significant way.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Taking adderall for the first time is like fucking magic. You feel great, you're focused, energetic and social. It doesn't last. In fact, it had the opposite effect for me as I continued to take it. Totally depressed emotions and mood. No motivation, and that was before the daily crash. Made me apathetic to pretty much everyone, gave me temporary OCD, made me vomit literally every morning.
If you're gonna take it, which I don't recommend, take it very rarely and on special occasions.
[–]FlamingDogPoop[S] 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
It's much like extended release meth. Every time you take it you're a little bit more burnt out. Discipline, practice, and a REALLY GOOD DIET. Minimize your distractions. Meditate daily. Read The Power of NOW by Tolle to have a good understanding of presence to avoid daydreaming, help make peace with things so you're less anxious, etc. You can do it. Put your phone away and all that bullshit. You got it.
[–]baladash_malanore 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was on Adderall for 6 years of my adult life and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. It doesn't give you motivation or discipline. Only focus. And it comes with a whole host of side effects that aren't immediately apparent. Shit fucks you up.

Make peace with your past, stay present, keep your eyes on the prize.
Indeed. Think about what's over the horizon from this day, forward.
And don't listen to mofos who tell you that you can't do this or that, or it's too difficult, or whatever. They're talking based on their own limitations, not yours.
[–]suske127 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Less like "hospital", more like "rehab" but true point regardless
One thing that should be added here is the need for reflection. Rather than look at time spent thinking/worrying about the past as a waste, a healthier approach for me has been constant introspection. It's how I really know myself as well as avoid repeating mistakes.
The key to it all is navigating your past with a very critical eye. And not judging yourself for past behavior.

Sometimes it's just bad luck, a guy could be pretty alpha to begin. He meets a chick and all goes well, after some dating they enter a relationship. Things develop like any normal couple would. But eventually things break up when the girl makes a stupid move. Tries to branch swing but gets pumped and dumped for the first time. The guy finds TRP by chance and it resonates.
Same girl meets another guy some later, pretty beta and unaware of dynamics. But the girl doesn't leave him, she's grown to fearful of another pump and dumping. She sticks with him for two years and things work out reasonably well. The guy finds TRP and it sounds like allot of bullshit.
Sometimes the Alpha gets shat on and the Beta gets a 24 month subscription to poon. And the wrong person finds TRP. Life is weird sometimes. All you can do is roll with the punches.

The past and the future are just thoughts.
There is only the eternal which is a view of time that makes past, present and future all exist in a single entity.
But you can change history.
Example:
Up until recently I entirely believed that 911 was real and not staged.
Now I see it as a complete fraud.
I once worked for an Enron owned company and we uncovered fraud in the accounting... my view of my work there suddenly changed.
History can be redefined not in absolute sequential terms but in your understanding for them. Your emotions can be reprogrammed. You can "Kill the Beta" and those old emotions truly die.
If the government fed you chemicals to dumb you down, you wake up and realize the fucking government was dumbing me down.
That is a victory... you rewrote the history and see the truth now.
[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 10 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
9/11 wasn't staged bro. There is no grand conspiracy against you. Only politicians 40 years ago catering to a new demographic that was encouraged to think for themselves in women. The ripple effect of that is being felt today, but the government isn't dumbing you down. People are stupid enough as it is.

But now we're hijacking this thread so let's all just drop that subject.

9/11 wasn't staged bro
No it was.
Most people didn't even know that Building 7 just sort of "fell down" for no real reason.
Plus... if you dig into the money side of it there were massive scandals related to Enron and many others where the documents were all destroyed. Having been involved personally in Enron related matters I know the mindset.
In fact, I even worked for the guy in Enron who set up the offshore accounts in order to hide their corrupt practices. He became so disgusted by the things he did that he quit before Enron was brought down and he set forth to build a dot.com company that would practice ethical practices (rather than the corrupt ones in play) but unfortunately that failed as corruption rules everything now.

To be "natural" is to imitate the herd mind and accept that your rulers are honest. (beta)
I am not "naive" to the real world.
