A couple of things at play here:

1) Cat-string theory: A cat will do anything to catch the string dangling in front of it. Once they catch the string, they immediately lose interest. Same concept applies to women and “unavailable men.” It is the same reason why a single man is essentially an incel until they get a girlfriend, at which point they suddenly become more attractive, which brings me to next point

2) Pre-selection: Women want a man that’s desired by other women. It is the reason why women like men who are in relationships/married. It is because another woman has selected to mate with this man, which demonstrates that this man is desirable and attractive.

3) Showing (too much) interest: If a man shows TOO much interest in a woman, it becomes a turn off for women because it shows that the man has scarcity, which ties to point #2 above. If a man has abundance, then that means the man is highly sought after. Show some restraint, live life by your own means and don’t be “thirsty”

I've thankfully learned my lesson but for a few years there, I couldn't help but go for the manic bipolar pixie dream girl.

They were exciting and fun. Sure, other girls might not cheat on me or steal things or make suicide threats, but they probably also wouldn't try to convince their roommate to have a threesome with us, or buy a half-gallon of cheap vodka and announce we're skipping class to drink screwdrivers all day.
