So, I've been dating this guy for five months now. I've known him for many years, we have mutual friends. The point is he's not a stranger. He's very well-respected in the community and has HVM traits. But, of course, I've been actively vetting him--and him, me. We have not slept together yet.
So, he posted a pic of something from a trip he was on and said a family member shared the post and said that someone commented something funny. The part about the family member sharing the post was true, but no one actually commented. I happened to see the post and I clicked on the shares because I wanted to see the comments he was talking about but there wasnt anything there. lol It's so silly and benign, and I don't understand what the point of making that part up was. Now I'm side-eyeing him.
Up until this point, he's been very solid. He calls when he says he will, goes out of his way for our dates (drives an hour to see me), has not pushed me for sex (he wants to, of course, but I told him he needed to get tested for STDs and he did last week), and he's kind and thoughtful--and people think highly of him (we're in our early 40s). My father died a few weeks ago, and he was right by my side, taking care of me, and helped me take care of a few things. So, he's been really solid up until this point. But having dated a narc a few years ago, I'm hyper-vigilant and generally distrustful now, so we've been taking it slow and he's respected that.
But now this. It's not a situation where I would simply ghost him like the manual says. I've known him too long to be that abrasive with him. So, what do you all suggest? Is this a deal breaker? Do I bring it up (awkward!), or do I keep dating him and look for other signs. I'm disappointed, though. Because while I know most people tell harmless lies from time to time, I have no way of knowing if this is indicative of a larger issue or not.

No idea if he was or was not lying. I’ll say that I constantly post and then delete comments on fb, ig and on Reddit. It will be for different reasons. Sometimes I get worried I’ll maybe offend someone or felt I let on too much about myself or painted myself in a way that could be misinterpreted. This especially happens when I say something I think is funny. Sometimes I just change my mind about publicly saying what I said, and I delete it.
I’d look at the post in front of him and say, oh I don’t see that comment you thought was funny. Or however you’d say it.
If he is lying, that’s obvious not gonna stop. In this case he may not have been.

Girl I completely feel you and what I said absolutely does not mean he didn’t lie. BUT on this one thing, I literally delete comments all the time.
