Don't take this as gospel but the chance that your company has logged all your Google Hangouts chats is quite low. It would take a MITM security certificate situation and they would also have to be actively looking for the traffic.
I would keep acting the way you normally do. If your manager brings it up with you, get on the front foot. Express disappointment that someone would acuse you of that. Ask the manager if they've ever known you to be disrespectful to women.

It wouldn't take much for one of the people he was chatting with to "turn over" their chat history with him if they felt pressured or compelled to do so. I'm guessing he didn't have his chats set to "off the record"
[–]swampbarbarian points points points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
These chats were with friends from the previous state I live in. They aren't connected in any way to my workplace.

Oh, then you're fine.
[–]pikadildo 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
It's very difficult to MITM Google if you are using their clients because they know not to trust anyone except themselves and they hardcode certificate pins in their clients.
But if you use a jabber/XMPP client, the burden is on you.
Also some industries screen and/or keylog everything for compliance.
And anyway none of that matters if subpoenaed or if one of your friends is loose lipped or careless.
[–]stonepimpletilists 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Yes. If you're using company tools e.g. jabber, then don't be surprised if they have a managed service that can pull up whatever logs required.
Anything sensitive said at work should never be typed. Key loggers are time prohibitive

Men are not disturbed by things themselves but by their thoughts about them ~Epictetus
You've done a lot of thinking here. Worked it up into third and fourth effects that may not even happen.
I should approach my manager about this allegation.
Is there something there?
I don't think she has any evidence to support her claims.
Think? Did something more happen at drinks then you are letting on to us? More at work? This is precisely why you don't shit where you eat.
You're being dodgy here. Did something more happen then using your office like a locker room? Next time be aware that in the business world it's an arena. No one is really you're friend there. Everyone will use what they know about you to get ahead or pull you down. Learn some Dark triad stuff.
One good tactic is to bring the team in have a team meeting. Have the team see you as happy fun guy that you aren't phased by any of this. Just like with gaming and dating. Be seen with others, being fun, being a leader. Someone is bitchy you will know what to do.
A leader adapts to the situation. Learn to flow through it and look and create opportunity.

She may be full of shit, but you say:
"I often use gmail chat to talk with friends during the day and have said many inappropriate things in my personal chats related to women."
In other words, you are using company property, on company time, to say inappropriate (demeaning?) things about women.
Sounds to me like you are doing exactly what she accuses you of, even if she's not on the square.
Cut that shit out, keep your head down and if you don't get promoted, it's on you, bud.
I'm with MT, No. Read through your acceptable use policy. Your only statements is you use equipment IAW company policy, and reference it, to display you know it.

get a lawyer .
Consider. You may be on the road to being railroaded for something that did or did not happen two years ago.
Anyway. Speak to your lawyer.
They have now given you enough ammunition for a lawyer to sue them for discrimination or some such.

Don't do anything. Be watchful and wait. Has your behavior been demeaning to women?
Do not be overly concerned about your manager seeking corroboration. This is a standard practice. Consider the manager's position. An allegation has been made. If she does nothing with it the manager can be considered culpable for failing to address a problem. A prudent first step for any manager is to seek corroboration in order to determine if further action is needed.
I don't know the significance of gmail chat or if that is accessible to your employer. Stop putting shit in writing you stupid fucker.

I would stick get a lawyer. has a way of making things go away
I suspect there is a lot more to this story than he is letting on. Maybe we will find out. Maybe not. Up to this point no action by his employer has been proposed against him. The only "fact" that he is in possession of is a statement from a departing employee.

I learned my shit about shutting the fuck up and not trying to clarify anything at the age of 16 after an arrest. I get a jew lawyer quick.
Good advice, generally speaking. However, he is not under arrest or certain of what, or even if, he is facing any action by his employer which is why I advise him against any preemptive steps. My instinct tells me there is more to the story and that the theft of company time is the least of his problems. Hope for his sake I am wrong.
I was thinking more along the lines of slander. Lawyer for offense rather than defense.
ex : someone said bad shit about me they couldn't prove.
then I didnt get a raise or a promotion or something... because someone thinks I don't like women, or am not "progressive" enough or what ever.
thats where I am coming from

For the short term these guys are correct. Portray yourself as nothing but above board, when and if pressed on it, reveal nothing. Say things like "I don't know what this is about, I've been nothing but professional at work, ask so and so."
If this all goes well, and she does end up on your team, you should make it your mission to fire her. You don't need someone like this who could remotely start any kind of discord on your team. Don't try to make her like you, etc. she needs to be gone.
you should make it your mission to fire her
Excellent advice. Depending on the scope of your authority and the size of your division, do it in such a way that she is not the only one to go. Do it as a reduction in force, re-organization or "right sizing." Much easier to get rid of protected class troublemakers when they are part of a larger group.

Yeah my experience is that a person, anyone, who can make that jump, is going to be a trouble maker.
I once had an innuendo dropped like that about me. My mistake? I was joking with my wife at work (I worked with her) and this chick told my boss I had made some sexist remarks.
Luckily my reputation was stellar and my wife was the other witness. I simply denied it and told anyone who would listen she probably misheard. "Ask my wife, we were having a personal conversation and I don't know why she was listening."
My boss was like, "Wait, you were talking to your wife?"
This was SOP for this chick. Everyone later found out she loved to drop the "he said something offensive" and it would later turn out to be,"Well I felt that way"
I learned to guard my words with her, and never have a conversation without her boss around.
Yup. Our supply techs always had a rule. Never joke about stealing supplies, because if something goes missing, you're the first one they ask.
So when idiots pull some BS, theres 0 to work with.
