Like the real BSA?

Today? worthless. And full disclosure I am an Eagle Scout with Palm decorations. I was an Asst SM for several years as well as lead my boys Cub Scout Pack until they moved on. That's when we ended.

The BSA doesn't teach what boys need to learn any more. The process to becoming an Eagle is mechanical and formulaic. Most scout camps now specialize in merit badge packages designed for a boy to earn his rank.

The point of the process was for the boy to come to understand what HE needed to do in order to organize and accomplish goals. What badges he needed in order to get the next rank and the steps involved.

I could go into great depth on how boy lead troops really are not. Sure there may be a few hold outs there but by and large the scouts are a shadow of what they used to be. At least in my area there are better options. Navy Sea Cadets. The group here gets kids scuba licenses and in the summer they go on 10 day ship cruise.

My other son is in Civil Air Patrol which puts them on a path to get a pilot's license. Better options and better lessons.

Boy scouts allows girls now. That should tell you all you need to know.

It might have been a good thing back in the day, now it is just another tool to make little boys not want to be men.

Many valuable lessons in the outdoors, loyalty, heirachy, leadership etc

Generally I would say it is more likely to contribute to a boy being alpha. But I would also say that about football or other outdoor team sports.

Scout master is exactly equivalent to a coach of sports suggested.

3rd generation Eagle here. I have my grandfather's leather bound program/guide from National Jamboree #1. It's a big deal in my family.

My son doesn't participate in scouts, my choice. It's nowhere near the same program that I went through. I'm ashamed of scouting in its current state.

One of my fondest memories was when I was a wee tenderfoot and we got caught (me and 2 other buddies) in the girls tents at some co-jamboree we were at. It was the first time a girl had willingly shown me her tits and man I was hoping for more. Well some chaperone mom heard the giggling and we were busted.

The next morning my scoutmaster, a commanding man and a Korean war vet, admonished us up and down about how would he explain to some girls dad why we were in her tent. And he said it again. Why we were in her tent.

"Do you understand, I can't explain why you were in their tent now can I?"

After that they came to our tent every night. I still have a fondness for zip up hoodies and Gettysburg to this day.

He was a good man, I hope he lived a good life after I knew him. Some lessons were direct, others were more subtle.

I’m an Eagle Scout. My son isn’t in cub scouts and won’t go into Boy Scouts. It’s a shame really because my experience was so awesome. Then again, it was the 80’s and my Scoutmaster was a former Vietnam Cobra helicopter pilot and we had a great group of parents involved with the group that coordinated monthly camp outs, trips to go snow camping, summer camps, 50mi and 100mi hikes.

For reference, I coach today’s kids in soccer, wrestling, and baseball; directly impact about 70 kids each year. Very few of the parents are invested enough to make the group what it needs to be. Fewer of the families are preparing the boys to be who they need to be. Also, my schedule is freaking tight with work, two kids in sports, and not to mention my own hobbies and the time I want to spend w/ a young HB9 GF (p.s. I’m divorced and have my kids every other week).

I’ve been preparing my kids to be leaders since birth. I’m training them with relevant skills to succeed in the world today. They’re exposed to business and trades and people/psychology training. I’d love for Scouts to have a place in my son’s life, but I can’t justify taking additional time away from my daughter (13yr old and more Red Pill than most of the people I interact with regularly).

What do you want to accomplish by being a Scoutmaster? Either do it or don’t. That’s your path.

I literally have no direct experience, except the local troop at my kids school is run by the biggest bunch of beta losers you have ever seen. While their husbands/kids are out on their camping trips their wives spend their time trying to flirt with me...
