There's a post here where someone asked about the point of the daily grind. I spend a fair amount of time here and on the main sub and this is an issue that seems to resonate with me. Looking at a lot of responses on that post, a common theme seems to be that OP is doing what is expected of him and not what he wants - something I completely relate to.

In light of that, how do you end up finding out what it is that you want? I've always done what was expected of me. Got good grades, went to college - the whole fucking spiel. I'm now at a point where I need to move but I don't know what to. I feel stunted by having to always meet the expectations of others as I now have no idea what it is that I want. I get periods of - for want of a better term - energy where I get psyched up to do this that or the other thing, but then that energy quickly disappears.

Upon reflection I've come to realize that the energy dies not because I'm afraid of the hard work that is needed (I've never been the type to shy away from hard work), but because I know that I'm not really in those aspirations nor do I see them as things that I want.

Which brings me to the question at hand: how does one go about finding out what it is that they want considering that they've spent their whole life doing what other people have expected of them? What really is a good starting point to figuring this shit out?
