My father taught me to drive a semi, the proper way to tackle and throw a block in football, and how to throw a ball properly; but all those things you mention I taught myself. And this was several decades before youtube. (Yes, Oldfag here.)

You figure it out by investigation, trial, and error. What's the line about good judgment? It comes from experience, which comes from bad judgment.

I think basic home repair skills are important. Can you fix the toilet if it stops working? Can you replace a broken floor board? Do you know how to reset your circuit breaker? Things like that.

The ability to use tools properly. There is nothing wimpier looking than a man who cant properly apply a metal screw into wood using anything from a screwdriver to an impact gun. Same goes for just about any tool that one would need around the home for maintenance indoors and outdoors.

And competency around guns.

I'm gonna go kinda unconventional here with my recommendations but my list would consist of things like how to gain and hold people's attention when you speak, how to manage your finances, how to set and achieve goals, how to negotiate, how to convince someone to do something you want them to do, and how to behave in an argument. Maybe this is helpful, maybe I've completely missed the point of your question. Hopefully it's the former but if it's the latter, the other replies to your question look like pretty solid recommendations

Age 17 I had a flat tire and didn't know how to change it. I felt useless, helpless and above all i felt like a woman when she asks a man to open a jar or something stupid. From then on I tried to learn how to do everything for myself.

Being upper middle class and planning to work in a white collar industry, you rarely NEED to know how to do things; you just pay someone else. I think its important to learn though. Oil changes are one example, I also taught myself to change brake pads/rotors as well. I learned at the time because I was a broke college student and would rather buy booze than pay someone who probably barely got through high school to do something I'm capable of doing, but now as a semi broke grad student I still do things myself. There's a sense of pride in doing things yourself, which I'm sure we're all aware of.
Anything I own I can service/fix myself for the most part; and 98% of this was YouTube taught.

Well it depends, most modern cars are female friendly and you don't really have any ability to tinkle with them.

Mostly you just spend a couple of spring afternoons just getting to know your car before you go for a drive.

Don't blame your dad for you not being educated or learned in any area of life. You're an adult now, time to take responsibility for yourself. It's 2015, you want to learn something, you have the internet which is the greatest resource at your fingertips. Wanna learn how to defend yourself and loved ones? go take a martial arts class. Wanna learn how to change a tire? google that shit. Just be curious and fuel that curiosity!

Most of these old school skills are outdated. Are you really going to need to know how to chop down a tree? Sure its cool, but don't judge yourself based on not having the skills
