Compare these two statements:

"I'm overweight and boring, but I don't believe social norms apply to me so I shouldn't have to look good to get a girlfriend."

and

"I'm a student and poor, but I don't believe social norms apply to me so I shouldn't have to tip when I go out to eat."

See the parallel? The whole point of the TRP mindset is to take the world as it is, not how you want it to be, and tipping is just part of going out to eat in north america. I'm just as Canadian as you, and probably as broke, but I make sure I can leave at least a tip when I go out to eat (something like $2 on a $15 bill).

And since you ask, yes it's worse to leave a minuscule tip than nothing at all. Leaving no tip says "I'm a cheapskate," but leaving a 15 cent tip says "I know I'm supposed to tip, but this is how much I think you're worth." No wonder that waitress acted like that, you did the equivalent of spitting in her face and telling her you think of her as garbage.

If you cant tip then go to mcdonalds or eat at home.

Depending on the state these people may make as little as 2 bucks an hour and change based on the fact that they get tips.

Don't feel obligated to tip. They make plenty of money, if they don't, then go try roofing or pouring concrete. That's what you fucking get for taking an easy entry level job. Every entry level job I ever had was on my feet all day. I worked retail and had to deal with shitty customers. FUCKING WAAAH! I made $5.XX an hour in 2003. No tips, no air conditioning, dirty, sweaty, hard fucking work... I was polite to every pissed off customer that ever took their shitty day out on me. Why? Because that was my fucking job. If your livelihood relies on a constant stream of donations... I mean, what words could I use to accurately describe how fucking stupid you are?

"oh but you take the job because it's expected that the people who go there will tip"

Well now's as good a time as ever for you to wake the fuck up. Start advocating for fair wages for servers and a ban on tip based compensation. No? Why not? Because you make way more fucking money getting tips that you don't have to claim? Yeah, I thought so.

OP, there's only one way to look at it. You leave whatever tip you want. You aren't legally, morally, or spiritually obligated to give one. The obvious corollary is that people will perceive you to be an asshole, regardless of your circumstance. It's a social expectation, and deviating from social norms gets you labelled an asshole.

The question is, do you care? Do you care what some barista who you'll never meet again cares? Do you care what some post-wall slut cares? (and make no mistake, most waitresses are).

That said, if you've got a place you're going to frequent on a somewhat regular basis it's probably in your best interest to tip. You can secure benefits that way, if you're perceived to be a good tipper. Works great for bars you frequent. More broadly, being generous is good way to secure network contacts. Good thing to keep in mind.

You realize in most restaurants, your server is getting paid significantly less than minimum wage, with the assumption being they will make minimum wage at least after factoring in tips? The standard for tipping is 15% of your check total. You didn't include what your check total was, so it's hard to know how much of an asshole you were, but either way, unless your check came to a dollar, tipping that waitress 15 cents was a giant dick move, and makes you a pretty shitty person.

ive worked in the service industry and its not pleasant. they on their feet all day, some of the managers are not pleasant, cook messes things up and the server takes the blame, etc.

if i calculate a tip and it comes out to 2 or 3 bucks, i ask myself, what can one buy for that? not much, not even a pack of smokes or a gallon of gas.

because im associated with the church and i eat out often on sundays, i have a habit of tipping 5 bucks a head, church goers have a horrible reputation for tipping bad. i dont care what the bill is, i feel fortunate that im able to do that and dining out for me is not about getting a bite to eat but a social experience.

couple of months ago, i went with some folks from church and they left a horrible tip, i was so embarressed, more so that i didnt have any cash on me (didnt know i would be going anywhere after church, my bad). you better believe after work the next monday I drove ten miles, asked for the server by name and gave him a respectable tip.

If you're that broke why not get a job as a waiter? This way you will be able to earn some decent cash (unless all your customers are assholes and don't tip) and you will have less time to whine about having to tip because you are a poor whiddle student who shouldn't be expected to tip bc tipping is for beta fags? Everyone wins in this scenario. Mostly us, though.

If you are in the USA, you're an idiot.

Waitresses/Waiters are paid something like 3 and 6 dollars per hour depending where because tips are part of their compensation.

If you don't want to tip, order your food for carryout.

This isn't a RP issue or subjugating to a female waitress. Tip waitresses/waiters based on their service. That's it. That's how the system works here. That's the norm here.

It doesn't matter if you are homeless, student or a billionaire. You walked into a restaurant and there are expectations for everyone who walks in.

Edit: You're from Canada, social norms in Canada indicate tipping is the norm.
