Honestly I feel it’s an attention thing. Same thing as people never posting about family & friends unless it’s a birthday or mother’s/Father’s Day.

I am guessing these are people that you dont know personally and just follow them as you stated. Another potential reason could be:

3: They realize that by appearing single it increases their following via parasocial relationship.

Many women (not all) but many are playing the game called social status. To appear as a higher valued person to other women."Look what I have that you don't". I was crazy about my ex and I'm a romantic guy, so I would take her on incredibly fun dates like kayaking the ocean, going to paris, watching the northern lights from a cabin or camping in the backyard.

She would constantly be posting about me and the places I took her and the things we did together, how much she loved me. At the time I thought is was sweet, but I realize now it was for validation from other women.

Eventually she cheated on me. Literally the whole town hates her now, they think she was absolutely crazy to throw all that love away. Because they followed us on our journey in life, they were there for the best moments.

So yeah. If you are 100% sure that the person you are with now is the person you want to be with for the rest of your life, no matter what hardships you face, I say post away. But if you're not the most stable person. I'd avoid it, just do the in a relationship Facebook thing and leave it at that.

Yo haha funny story. I bought a really really nice bouquet of flowers for my girlfriend one year and she took a picture of them to post to social media.

Some other girl copied that photo and put it on her stories saying "Feeling loved" . I've never felt so sad for another human being than I did for that girl on that day. Almost made me want to send her flowers too, the poor girl.

I don’t post all that often about relationships on social media because like..... why?

I also mostly just post nature photos. I think a lot of people use Valentine’s Day as a “hey I do love this person even if I don’t post about them much”. I didn’t do it this year but many do.

At the end of the day it really doesn’t matter much. I do often feel like posting about how glorious your life is on social media is just posturing. I jokingly say I don’t post about my relationships because I don’t need to. It is great, I don’t need to posture it as such.

While I(m28) think you’re two reasons are valid in this day and age, I think there’s a third option you might be missing here. I briefly dated someone who had followers in the 10s of thousands while I only had followers in the hundreds. Essentially only my friends and family follow me and I don’t post a lot. She posted pictures daily but rarely included me outside of stories and when she did it’s not like she would tag me or mention anything about a relationship. At most she would refer to me as a friend which I didn’t mind.

Around 5 months of us dating I posted a photo of us and she asked me to take it down and when I asked her why she never posted any photos of us like that and she said “Because what if we break up?” Which made a lot of sense to me in hindsight. For someone who has thousands of followers and uses social media as some sort of public photo album it makes sense. Because to her, anything she posts has some sort of permanence since she rarely went and took down any photos on her socials. We did eventually break up for other reasons but I didn’t see the big deal in taking down the photo I posted or even leaving it up in case she meant a lot to me (she didn’t) because it’s just my family & friends but I can see why someone who takes social media that seriously would be worried about posting photos with someone else in that nature because it can come off as wishy-washy if you’re posting photos with someone one week and then the next posting about being single. Not only does it come off as wishy-washy, it could lead to thousands of followers asking her “what happened?!” “But I thought you two were perfect” “oh so does that mean you’re single now?”

It’s kind of like making plans to go to a mutual friends wedding 6 months down the line when you’ve only been dating for 3 months and you have to check mark whether you’re going alone or with your partner and you don’t know where the relationship is going. I feel like Valentine’s Day gets a pass for most people because everyone posts photos of their “Valentine’s” even if they aren’t significant others because even friends or family can be seen as someone’s “Valentine” but outside of V-day there’s a sort of statement about where the relationship is going that is often looked over which makes a lot more sense to me. I guess it could fall under the “keeping options open” category, but I think social media’s are more personal and dating is hard so it can be a little chaotic to post about every new relationship you enter when there’s the chance that it could end in less than a year. I don’t think it’s always about just “looking single” it’s more about being sure of where things are going.

It’s #1 more likely. I never post my boyfriends when I have them or very rarely. It’s not to appear single lol.

Maybe in high school that’s a thing. I don’t know.
