Did a similar thing, gained muscle, yep, has only positive effects. Working out is one of the wisest investments you can make.

I can only confirm this. Pros say real confidence is when you don't have to look into the mirror to feel good but i think a good start for a healthy confidence is looking in the mirror and finding yourself sexy and attractive.
I would fuck me.

I would fuck me hard.

And then I would bury my head in the pillow and cry afterwards.

I'd fuck me, but no anal.

I like what I see in the mirror but hate what I see in pictures. Confidence still nonexistant.

Learn how to smile. I know that sounds weird but seriously learn how to smile. If you can make a smile be the most natural expression for you you'll thoroughly enjoy what you see in pictures
I would fuck me all the time.

Can't speak for OP but I've done exactly the same thing. Has taken me 18 months, but the first 12 of that was done relatively lazily. Learn to eat properly ASAP.
[–]hexag1 2 points3 points4 points 13 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
Can you elaborate on your diet?
[–]StewartKruger 5 points6 points7 points 13 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
Learn about macronutrients first and foremost. If you want to bulk, find your required calorie intake/day for maintenance, and start by adding 500 calories on top of that. Get at least 1 gram of protein/pound of target bodyweight, fill the rest in with carbs and fats, the ratio of which is more or less up to you. You might like 40P/40C/20F. You might like 40P/30C/30F.
Make your fats healthy and your carbs complex - outside of necessary quick carb times. Make your proteins high in BCAA and essential amino acid content.
Eat lots of chicken, beef, eggs, tuna, oats, avocados, brocoli, almonds and peanut butter. Whole grain anything. Invest in good protein powders, whey protein concentrate or isolate aren't a necessity but they are the shit post workout. Micellar casein is a winner before bed. Get a multi vitamin, get fish oils, get vitamin C.
My secret to getting in all the calories? A blender, and this: http://i.imgur.com/ntYu5.png

Does that protein shake go down easy? Looks like a monster to put down.
[–]StewartKruger 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
No, haha, it's huge. If you're mega hungry you can smash the whole thing, otherwise just drink 1/3 or half of it and store the rest for a few hours later. I love having it first thing in the morning and when I get back from work/uni cause I'm always starving at that point.
[–]Classy_Debauchery 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I'll have to try that out... I've been just making a basic shake to go with egg whites and oats but that looks a lot easier to make in the morning. >:D
[–]StewartKruger 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It's pretty quick if you have things arranged in your fridge/pantry well haha.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
What kind of protein do you have? Usually if I let it sit for a while, it gets all foamy and undrinkable.
In that, I put in straight, natural flavoured WPC. It's pretty terrible, if you can, I'd get something flavoured.
[–][deleted] 13 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That's pretty much everybody's problem.

40 pounds of muscle in 18 months is impossible naturally without drugs involved. When you're bulking to gain weight, you're going to having to eat more, which means you'll gain muscle (as long as you're eating and training properly) but you'll also gain some fat. The most amount of pure muscle without any fat the average guy (not girls, girls have a harder time) can build is about .25lbs to .50lbs per week (maybe closer to one pound if you're a genetic freak), considering he's not on any drugs like steroids, and this is with everything done perfectly. Even so, you'll likely gain a small amount of fat along with it. Your 40lbs is probably not all muscle. Although, if you started of super skinny, some fat would probably help with the overall look.
If you're looking to gain muscle, take the caloric increase slightly and take it slow, maybe 200-300 increase in calories and adjust upwards from there depending on the results. I've took it fast before and gained a lot of fat. It took a lot of work to burn that fat off.
[–]StewartKruger -1 points0 points1 point 13 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link
Yeah, sorry - I wasn't claiming to have gained 40lbs of pure muscle, it's definitely a mixture but I'd say 70/80% is muscle, like OP. It's pretty hard to tell because I never properly measured bodyfat % before I started bulking.
EDIT: Also, it's not impossible, that's bullshit. Compared to what's possible I've had a slack arse 18 months. I've been through massive stall periods where I wasn't putting on any weight because I wasn't eating enough, and I've still managed to put on (a safely claimed) 30lbs of muscle. If I actually logged my calories instead of eyeballing everything and slept better and stopped trying to train strength as often, I have no doubt I could have done 40lbs of pure muscle in 18 months without drugs.

I gained 33lbs (I'd say 80/20 ratio muscle to fat) in about 3 months doing GOMAD and lifting on a 4 day split program. I also ate like it was my job.
I tried GOMAD but I got insanely lactose intolerant after about 2.5 weeks. Use caution
Edited it for you
[–]PirateBuckley 1 point2 points3 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This was the biggest game changer for me as well I think, I went from being skinny fat to being tone and healthy, While I've not put on as much as you, (more like 15lbs) I'm only 5'5 and being 135 I with abs and actual muscles and shit rather than the 120 is fucking awesome. I don't think I need to put on much more with my build I would look creepily ripped. :l But yea while you don't have to be fucking macho man status, looking healthy does fucking wonders for your self esteem.

Yep, fitness and overal exercise is amazing for confidence and feeling good. Anyone who doesn't do fitness should try it out for a half year orso, it's amazing.
[–]rotoreuter48 0 points1 point2 points 13 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Can confirm a similar thing - losing weight. Lost a shitload of weight, once I hit my 8% body fat I am bulking.
I really don't think I only gained 8 lbs of muscle and 32 pounds of water and fat. I would be one bloated dude. Check my edit if you'd like

40 lbs = 18.14 kilograms 5 lbs = 2.27 kilograms

Your looks aren't just for other people's viewing pleasure. Losing some weight, gaining some muscle, buying that cool shirt you've always wanted, these are things that can considerably boost your confidence. Remember, no one is perfect and there is always room for improvement.
