Books to read to improve small talk?

Here's all you really need to know:

Avoid making the conversation like an interview. Don't have back-to-back biographical questions. "Where are you from? Where did you go to college? What do you do for a living?" Snooze. Ask questions that engage emotion. "What do you like about your job? Do you get to go visit your home often?" And when you're hitting a roadblock, use the ol' interviewer's technique of saying "Tell me more about X."

If you're going to read a book to get better at small talk, pick up a copy of The New York Times. If you don't have anything to say, you'll find it very hard to talk. Keep up with the news, read some non-fiction (not self-help!), read some fiction, go to a museum, watch a new movie, watch a classic movie -- just do stuff that gives you something to talk about.

Something that I actually learned here on reddit is using the F.O.R.D. technique. F stands for family. O is for occupation. R is for recreation. And D is for dreams. Don't just run through questions just about these. Instead use these as a jumping of point. If she gives you information take it deeper. If you see she is really into a topic use Why? How? When? Get her to really explain and learn what she likes and doesn't. Make jokes and keep things light, tell stories and tell her your interests. You don't want her to feel like you are questioning her the whole time your talking. Be friendly and just talk to random people it can be kind of scary but the only way to refine your conversation skills is through practice. Also, don't feel like you always have to say something sometimes a little bit of silence is golden.

Try to find out what kind of books you like instead of looking for a book that is supposed to make you a lot better at conversations. Once you start to read, you will broaden your mind and will have a lot to think/talk about.
