It's just a question you have prepared to get a group into innocuous conversation with you, fail-proof. You should always have at least one just so you don't have to wonder what would have happened if you'd actually talked to that girl but you "didn't have anything to say". I try to incorporate my real-life into these. When my sister was graduating college, I opened like this:

"Hey, quick question for a female. My sister's graduating college, what's a good graduation gift?"

I was in a bar with a friend and Julia Roberts appeared on a talk show, promoting her new movie. You couldn't hear anything so I was trying to figure out what movie it was with my friend. Finally, I turned to the people at the next table over, "Hey, what is the new Julia Roberts movie? I can't for the life of me remember it?"

One of my friends is vaguely ethnic so an easy opener is just, "Hey, we were just talking about this, where would you think my friend here is from based on how he looks?"

If you just google canned openers, you'll find the Jealous ex-girlfriend opener, which pretty much works every time, though apparently it gets overused out in LA. Actually, christ, just google "canned openers". You'll find more than you can ever use. Of course the whole thing feels better if you can improvise one - just take the last thing you were debating with your friends and pose it to the next people you see.

Fuckin Canned Openers

But for serious, openers are awesome. One day when you're a PUA Master you just improvise all your openers. But when you're just starting out it's a great way to overcome your AA.

The purpose of a canned opener is to make you comfortable approaching strangers. I am incapable of making these work. Instead I do situational openers. I invest my energy in that moment in observing and being sensitive to those around me. I notice what people are wearing, how they smell, how they look. Look at people and comment on how they look. If you see a girl who looks bored, try telling her that. If you see her wearing something out of the ordinary, talk about it!

Actually do this with everyone. Everyone wants to talk, and they're all just waiting for you to get the ball rolling. I think David Wygant is the guy to listen to if you've found yourself in this particular seduction forum.

A canned opener is an opening line or series of lines you use to try to initiate conversation with a HB. You memorize them like a joke, and then repeat them verbatim, as if they came "right out of the can." By their nature they are usually bland and come across as awkward and tryhard. Some say that using a canned opener sardonically can work, setting you up as the "funny guy" or "happy-go-lucky guy," but it really isn't something I would recommend. Seriously, don't use these lines.

A related (but very different) technique involves a preplanned subject related to the frame you're expecting to find yourself. If you're at a party, you might open with a comment about how bad/good the drinks are, or how disgusting the beirut/pong tables are. Notice that in this case, you have a preplanned framework you're constructing the conversation around, not preplanned "lines," which will just as often come out stale as their culinary counterparts.

I have occassionally (and successfully) used a canned opener in this manner:

After establishing a bit of a rapport and chatting for a bit with the HB, I escalate by saying something along the lines of "Is this the part where I'm supposed to say 'Are you tired, because you've been running through my dreams all night?' "

I still only use this when the girl has already established a playful manner and a willingness to blatantly flirt. Her response to the above opens up new lines of conversation. But I would never, ever use a canned opener as a hook, and I'm an actor, so I read scripted lines all the time.

TLDR: Never use canned openers, always contribute your persona into your hook, and keep it fresh
