lol no! It's about context and time of the day. If you're both very young, it's usually drinks no matter the time of the day. Usually, after 5 or 6 pm it's also drinks. In the end, it doesn't matter. Just invite her to a bar and she can order whatever she wants...

If it's in the morning or the middle of the afternoon, it might make sense to get coffee. If it's in the evening, maybe it makes sense to get drinks.

If you want drinks in the afternoon, get drinks. If you want coffee in the evening, get coffee.

This is my 3-step formula:

1st date: coffee -> 2nd: drinks -> 3rd: movie (or dinner - anything more intimate)

Coffee gives me a good idea on who a person is through little commitment on my part (time + money). If i want to bounce early I can because a) i'm sober to drive and b) it's a coffee date. It's simple, informal, and highly effective. I can gauge how attracted a chick is to me through coffee and move accordingly on the second date.
Drinks help loosen people up so you can dig a little deeper. She'll be more relaxed because she's already met you and you can get even more casual. Here, my goal is the makeout at the end, while prefacing this with heavy kino and emotional conversation. In my most recent date, I got to third base, and denied her sex.
By this time, things are really starting to pick up. At this point, getting laid should be a non-issue (if that's your goal). Get her feeling comfortable the whole time and get her to reveal more about her sexual side.

I don't like to do anything crazy until after the third date because that usually requires a lot of time and effort on my part. I personally value my time so taking a girl hiking, a ball game, boating, whatever is my "gift" to them. A lot of people emphasize "fun" but you can have just as much on a coffee date as you can have at an amusement park - they are just different "types" of fun. It ultimately comes down to YOU, not the venue or activity. If you can be fun and engaging in a traditional "boring" setting, you'll be even more fun doing an exciting activity.

This might not work if you're young, but for me a bit older, a lot more dates which start with drinking end up being a wild night.

Only once did I have a hookup from a coffee date, but our next stop after that was the bar at 3 pm, so just goes to show you.

Oh my lord you think about this too much. If you're funny/interesting/attractive it doesn't matter what the location is just do what you want.
