It's funny, I was going to do a post on condoms just the other day.

Not to burst your bubble, but this storage problem is a needless worry. I read a factsheet on the Male Natural Rubber Latex Condom produced by the World Health Organisation's Family Planning and Population Reproductive Health Technical Support centre.

As I suspected, condoms are much more resilient than we give them credit for. Just have a look at page 13:

Heat was also shown to degrade latex properties, probably through the propagation of vulcanizing cross-links among the latex molecules, leading to a more brittle and breakable product. [This study] has, however, demonstrated that the accumulated heat, or the caloric load, required to generate this process is comfortably beyond that generated by the average temperatures ordinarily found even in tropical countries.

That's according to the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health (PATH). They were so impressed by the results of their study that it:

raised the level of confidence to the point that routine testing of stored condoms, even in the tropics, is no longer recommended as a critical component of quality assurance.

I hope that put your fears to rest.

Now, on another condom related issue, I'd like to give a Gold-plated PUA warning, complete with total generalisations about women.

Perhaps some of you purchase your condoms in bulk online (I certainly do). When you receive the parcel for the first time, it's tempting to put the whole lot into a fishbowl and store them on your beside table for public display -- it makes us feel manly that we need 120 condoms at a time.

Do not do this.

Women are turned off by an excess of prophylactics. Whereas to us, it's a glorious projection of dozens and dozens of future erotic couplings; to women, it unfortunately suggests the same thing, which is exactly why it creeps them out -- they can't help but wonder who's going to get the benefit of all this latex. And besides, they prefer to be in this very personal moment with you now, and forget everything else.

Keep five or six condoms at most in your bedside receptacle, whatever that may be -- and in my experience, preferably hidden altogether. Even if this does not apply to ALL women, why take the risk of ruining the mood.

I'm curious, they mention your wallet going in your back pocket where it will be pressed close to your body when sitting down, exposing it to higher heat than normal. But what about if you keep your wallet in your front pocket with the condom in the side that's facing away from you? Doing a quick check on my own wallet (which is always in my front pocket), the side that's against my leg is warmer than room temp, but the side facing out seems to be about room temp. I admit it's not a very scientific test, but it seems like it could be safer there than in a back pocket.

Hmm nothing about polyurethane (Trojan Supra)... shame, I like to keep a box of these handy too just in case my girl has a latex allergy.
