Remember kids: don't worry to try to fill up the silence. Own that silence; shows you're comfortable in your skin - it might happen that she starts the conversation again. When that happens, know that you did well.

These kind of topics really irk me. "Opening up sets", finding conversation topics... It's like we're trying to find ways to make the interaction as inauthentic as possible. Do you want to get to know this woman? Ask her things that will intuitively move this along. Lots of men are worried about women's boundaries - I leave no conversation topic off the table, first date or not, and I usually I get to know women very intimately and very quickly. If she doesn't like my conversational approach, she's not my kind of person anyways.

Another topic that fits in well is one I use, "What kind of animal would you be?"

Everyone usually has a favourite and it doesn't hurt to have an answer thought of for yourself either. Also if you know some weird or basic facts about some animals you can demonstrate value this way or make them laugh with something a particular animal does, or playfully tease them for their choice as well. This is a question that hits every point OP is talking about as it can create higher value, could have a touch of controversy, it's positive in nature, and conveys a bit of personality.
