I can't do the simple "hello, how are you" - I'm just too awkward with that approach.

Use the circumstance and environment. I'm going to use some personal examples since I don't know your situation.

Book-store: See a chick looking at a book - "ohh nah you don't want to get that one" boom conversation goes from there. (teasing/bullying/playful vibe)

University class: "hey is it all good if I sit here", usual answer is "yes", sit down, make some comment "damn it's hot as fuck aye", boom conversation goes forward. (normal vibe)

Store: "hey, so are those cookies actually even good though" boom convo goes from there. (playful/questioning vibe).

It's rarely what you say, but how you come across to the other person. If you say any of the above without having the correct vibe, you're going to fuck it up.

My whole approach philosophy is this: funny, confident, playful with a sprinkle of bullying.

Here's a couple of ideas to run with (and they have been helpful):

The sports conversation: This can work if you and the other person happen to be sports fans. Let's say if you're a Red Sox fan and you see someone wear a Red Sox t-shirt. You can say something like 'Go Sox'. If they respond positively, you can make an observational statement about how they're doing or simply ask if they caught the last game. If you see them wearing Yankees gear you can playfully say 'Booo Yankees'. Tone is key here so you don't piss them off.

The current situation: Let's say you're in a coffee shop that is quiet. You order your coffee and decide to have a quick conversation with a barista (never mind the end goal like getting a number or whatever). You can say something like, 'Looks like you're getting some peace and quiet today'.

It's definitely more of your attitude hun, because what's robotic to one person is thrilling said by another person. So focus on how the words you say make you feel

Cold reads. Tease her with some silly (but ultimately cute or flattering - this is key) first impression.

Talk like you’re already in a conversation with her. Today 1 of the numbers I got, I stopped her, walking in opposite directions, by saying “oh my goodness, your hair” she says “what” I said “it’s so pretty” she was a lightskin with a big curly afro. After that I was in an art gallery and while looking at a display, I waited for a girl to come closer and simply said “so what do you think?” And from there we chopped it up, kinda had a insta date going around looking at the rest of the pieces together

Basically anything that concerns your current circumstances and makes sense. Look her in the eyes, smile, induce some emotions, ask her for her name. Find something that connects you and talk with her by any minor excuse. Context of getting to know each other is always in the air.
