Your "study date" was obviously like a normal regular date. If you now set things for the "real" date, she may feel pressure to reciprocate to your romantic advances there. These are not proper dynamics, she got pretty defensive about it. I would suggest to forget about that way, make one step backwards and continue naturally from the point that you were interacting. Now it's mainly up to her to adjust to this new potential context of yours.

Reading between the lines, you described her as nervous. You may be coming on a little too strong for her. Probably better to be indirect with someone like that, at least in the beginning. Like just invite her to lunch or something without calling it a date.

I actually use this line all the time on people myself. And it’s a genuine thing if I don’t know what my work/school responsibilities will be, and if I’ll have enough time to fit you in and do nothing for a few hours.

But everyone is different.

I guess this is one of your first few ventures with girls and you may take what people say literally. Look man, yes there are nuanced situations and this one may have a very slight chance that she will “think about it later and get back to you”. But 9/10 times when someone says that, it’s just an indirect way of rejecting someone without any form of confrontation.

Most women are not usually comfortable with rejecting someone because they are acutely aware of how one feels when being rejected OR they are acutely aware of the reaction most guys give off and don’t want to deal with it. Depends on the woman and their experience in what dictates their actions in how they reject people.

Either way, indirect forms of rejection are just part of the game, and having any form of hope just hurts you more, even if there is a slight chance. Just confront the situation and firmly assume that she didn’t want to actually go on a date with you, and in the moment just said that to not deal with any bad reaction.

This always leads to better results and getting up quickly. “Surprises are always better than getting what you expected.” If you understand that, then you know better.
