Congratulations bro, you did an awesome job. It’s always a mental battle with these things but it gets easier the more women you approach. Don’t stop here, make sure you’re approaching other girls too.
Also, I always recommend this book to people because of how it transformed my game and understanding of what makes women tick. It’s called How to be a 3% man by Corey Wayne.
Read through it while you’re interacting with girls, it will teach you the fundamentals of developing confidence, not being needy, what are some major turn offs & more.
Good luck though, you’re more confident than you give yourself credit for.

Damn bro. Good job for reals. All I’m gonna say is to look at this for what it was - you got out of your comfort zone and asked out a girl.
I felt like I was on top of the world when I asked out a girl from work and she said yes. It was my first time ever asking someone out and it was a yes right off the bat. I text her the next morning all playful and shit and she apologizes saying she misled me and she has a boyfriend.

good for you.
pay attention to your internal dialogue "despite totally failing at..."
NO. you did not fail.
this is what you thought inside.
But...it doesn't really matter, right? because the reality is you got the number and that is what you wanted to do to move things forward.

Good job. Technique and pointers and all this other stuff we talk here is really just such a small portion of the reality. It's all just to increase your chances. Reality sorts out the rest. Any genuine connection of any caliber beats the hell out of everything else but you have zero chance without trying.

This is great to hear. The fact that you struggled to make conversation, but it kept going probably means that she didn't care what you were talking about anyway, she just wanted to talk to you more. Those are great times for questions.
If you weren't feeling confident before, I bet that helped, lol.

We would have some awkward pauses. I would then start to try and come up with a new topic. The last time it happened I said I have to go. She then said she also had to go to class. I thought it would be best not to try too hard to talk much right away.
I will point out then we started leaving she walked a bit faster then me. She seemed pretty nervous and I could notice it in how she walked. I felt like that awkward silent thing, "should we to the parking lot together or??!!". But seeing how nervous she was made me feel better.

This a bit long-winded but...https://youtu.be/b-a1jXgAsQI
Key points are broke down.
And I'll summarize my take. Are you a king or a jester? This is her turn in the spotlight so on a pause just look at her like " and......" , Don't say anything but be comfy and expecting , she'll fill the gap.
If you have to ask a question you can but it should be easy if you were actively listening and following the breadcrumbs instead of just being in your head trying to think of the next thing you gotta say. This comes off to women as " just waiting for your turn to talk"

I tried stalling as much as possible so I could walk out with her.
I do this too.
I waited at the entrance of the building for her.
I'm also guilty of this. I wonder what women think of this sort of stuff.

There’s nothing wrong with waiting as you described. Guys do this with me all the time.
The weird look you might get in the instant we see you isn’t anything negative. It’s just an automatic surprise response cause we didn’t expect to see you there. That’s all.
You’ll drive yourself crazy by analyzing every little thing. Just focus on the overall interaction.
Men worry too much about coming off as creepy.
You’re much more likely to miss out on a girl that’s interested because you’re thinking up reasons to not approach.
Present your best self, then leave it to us to decide how we feel.
As I’ve said, actual creeps never worry about being creepy.
Could you tell me how girls have reacted to you doing this? I did mention it in my post but it seemed like she initially reacted negatively to me doing this. It's hard to tell with the masks on though. She gave me this wide eye looked that kinda made me feel discouraged at first.

I've waited in class until a girl I didn't know leaves so we can talk on the way out. I don't think they notice I waited so we chatted normally and didn't mention it.
If she is busy asking the professor a question and I'm one of the last people to be in the classroom, I'll leave and walk outside really slowly and act like I'm busy texting in the chances she exits. Again, most girls don't mention it being creepy and will talk to a fellow classmate they have never met.
I probably over think it being creepy, but I never get bad reactions.

It's creepy don't do it. It only worked out in this scenario because you quickly had a good enough reason to want to talk to her, which gave her a sigh of relief (teacher told you she was also a math major). It was still a bad move on your part, and in general don't do that.

This is a sign for me to get out of my own head and talk to girls I’d like to befriend. I’ve been in college 3 years and for some reason I just can’t bring myself to make moves. Thanks for this inspiring post

We are meeting up Wednesday to study together. I'm not entirely sure on what I should do. I'm thinking about making a move once we finish. I will probably tell her I thought she was really cute and would like to date her. But if she wasn't interested I'd still like to be friends so we can study together.

Don't wait til your done, make it clear with body language. Math related jokes and inuendo are pretty easy. Even corny ones like If x+u=25 then x=15 because u are a 10 But hey look some up you might find some in your own style that you may or may not have a moment to work in.
You should be signaling the whole time even though you're doing your study thing.
Get close, bump/nudge her a little. Tease. When you make eye contact think about how pretty she is, it will make you give a slight genuine smile and some eye twinkle without even thinking about it.
Have a plan on the studying and try to mostly lead. Not act like you're teaching her but just a plan so you look like you know what you're doing.

I think she's actually older than me. She is ahead of me in terms of math classes. I'm all the way down in calc 1 while she finished calc 3 and linear algebra. But I have studied proofs a lot so I will probably have an edge on those. It seems like we will both be way better than the other at certain things.
I'll be sure to try and signal though.

Leading isn't about knowing more....it's just about having a plan as far as how you will study and what. Being prepared with coffee or snacks or what have you.
Or you can even lead by asking. Ok so what next? Are we done with that part or do you think we should hit this more? How about we look at x, what do you think? I'm a little sketchy in this part. I'd appreciate it if you could help me with this. Don't let her have to make the plan ahead of you, at least not without suggestions.
See what I mean, you're following her there but you're leading the action instead of just waiting to be drug around like a puppy.

A good strategy is to always go for a number everywhere all the time, so it's second nature..Every guy and girl you meet, give them your phone during conversation and say "You seem cool, here, put in your phone number."
Also, try to increase your friends group and always have fun group activities that you're going to (like Friday night parties, or Saturday friend group day hikes). Invite her to this and let her be part of your awesome life. Conversation: "hey, a bunch of us are going to this awesome party on Friday..(Give her your phone)..put in your phone number, you have to come"
