General behavior patterns to identify if a girl wants to be approached
The only issue with this is not that these three things you've mentioned are wrong.
It's that adopting a mindset of "looking for signs or patterns that you should do something," is not the best strategy.
You might read something wrong before you actually go in and find out that she's not that into it after you start interacting directly.
This approach overlooks the common situation of a girl not really showing signs until you interact with her.
Most real "signs" of interest won't show up until a guy has gotten his ass in there and started physically escalating even a little.
Standing around looking for patterns before you approach, leads to missing opportunities because one was busy looking for signs; reactive, not proactive.
2
The idea of trying not to offend someone or go where one isn't welcome, is often one of the underlying premises for this tactic of looking for signs that someone wants to be approached.
But this idea is flawed, because the real problems most guys have are:
A failure to pay attention to the girl and adapt to the feedback they get. Like if she's clearly not into the conversation after a few minutes of investigating, then you kindly peace out. You don't try to force a 20-30 minute conversation out of awkwardness like that, nor do you try to get a phone number out of an interaction that's gone nowhere.
A failure to manage expectations going in. A lot of guys go in invested in something with a girl they know nothing about. There's a huge difference between a casual dude knowing he is a sexual being and owning it, versus a dude who is invested in the expectation of having sex with someone they haven't qualified yet.
If guys can manage these two things and just get their asses in there and interact, they'll see the lay of the land. An interested girl will show "signs" as the guy tests the waters by escalating a little. (This doesn't even require much, if any, actual physical contact. Just entering her space bubble will get you your initial responses.)

Your advice is being proactive on the lookout for all possible options one may want. OPs advice is reactive to options that are also interested in them first. Both are valid advices.
OPs is best suited for beginners as this way they would have more positive interactions to start with giving them the confidence to continue doing more. Where as if a lot of negative ones come from not acting correctly or being pushy/needy because of lack of experience and anxiety issues could result in demoralisation. Brute force rejection is only good for those who have their shit together, those who do not, should take small steps and take it easy on themselves as they are still trying to develop and grow both emotionally and mentally both in the game and life. But once that growth happens, that step to be themselves and not worry and anxiety issues control, your advice is best.
As you have mentioned, many women are good at controlling themselves. In fact the stigma that comes with slutty behaviour is openness to express attraction to men (In men its backwards as in a relationship they need to control themselves as they have a partner, women become more open because they know they are unavailable, where as before the relationship women control themselves more knowing they dont want to seem too pushy, and guys are more pushy openely). So this stigma makes them very good at camouflaging into obscurity, and therefore only when approaching and making your intentions clear do they may feel its safe to also participate in the game.
. . .
There was a cool video about a guy teaching a seminar posting a while ago, telling women to also go for it, because this natural ability by women, perhaps pushed by social pressure, has caused men of our generation to not want to bother them, not appear approachable as they are always with headphones, or rushing somewhere. I feel like the society is chaos atm, as there is no general rule of being. Previously there have been religious rules, social rules by cultural uprising, but in the modern world where everything is becoming mixed, young men, like myself are coming to an impasse because there isnt a general rule book on how to act anymore. Everything we learn is from whats around us, and not all of us can get there, this sub is like this little rule book, I like it. Has so many obvious when you know advice, thats lost to younger generations as nobody really can teach it effectively, not at school, not our parents, def not our equally developing and lost peers of youth.

"OPs is best suited for beginners as this way they would have more positive interactions to start with giving them the confidence to continue doing more." Disagree. If you rely on positive reactions for confidence, you'll never become confident. Becoming confident is really all about getting to a point where you're indifferent to the way women react to you, whether positive or negative.
You can't control the way people react to you, and trying too hard to make sure you only get positive reactions is a sign of insecurity. Let the chips fall where they may, getting rejected is part of the game - no one gets good at this by avoiding rejection, they get good by embracing it.
[–]Lord_Augastus 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Brute force is one tactic to overcome personal turmoil. Often it should be the first one tried, but realise not everyone is mentally strong. Some may have depression(or other personal issues) and you cant just sit around waiting for a perfect day, like you said. So even though active approach is good, some prefer passive. If they notice a girl is interested they can reciprocate. Then i did go onto saying once the initial lessons are learnt they should go for active approach to really learn the game. Not everyone learns swimming by being thrown into the deep end.
[–]Socialinception 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
I had severe panic disorder when I started to learn about game, yeah it sucked to go out with that, but avoiding a problem can only make it worse - so I stopped using my feelings as an excuse, and started taking action.
Passivity is the main reason guys don't get laid. Truth is, when a guy waits for girls' to give him signs to approach, he's going to spend a lot of time waiting.
Girls give me approach invitations when I go out, but when I was inexperienced I didn't notice them - I was insecure and so I just assumed that when a girl was looking at me it was because my hair looked stupid or something - not because she was interested.
Our reality gets filtered through our emotions, so if you're the kind of guy who is inexperiened with women, you're probably not going to notice the signs women give you as signs, you're going to just see excuses not to approach (she's too tall/hot/busy/etc. etc)
The only way out of this is to start taking the reigns and approach, even when you're not confident the girl is going to respond well.
Now, I would say that when you're less experienced you may want to start with less direct opens - but to wait for girls to give you a sign that you should open them, I've just never seen that work.
[–]Lord_Augastus 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Also my advice is also aimed at general dating, not the art of pickup. Art of pickup is really good at learning the dating game, because its direct and with a purpose.
I do agree getting over yourself and just getting things done is the best way to learn. Its a very common advice, and to the point. But realise that not everyone is alpha, you may have learnt to be alpha, some men stay beta. Doesnt mean they dont benifit from this advice, but beta males do like the OPs way more. Turning a beta into an alpha isnt always easy with brute force.
[–]Socialinception 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Pickup doesn't have to be direct - honestly, I think direct game is usually bad game - it can be done well, but most guys who try to be direct do it pretty badly.
I think the last sentence is important there, "it isn't always easy with brute force." To me, wanting it to be easy is a huge mistake. It's not going to be easy, and if you try to make it easy, you're just setting yourself up for dissapointment and frustration. Learning success with women is hard, but it's also very rewarding. Trying to avoid the hard part and get straight to the rewards by doing things like only approaching women who give you IOIs' isn't the kind of approach that leads to success - at least from what I've seen.

____1____
Both are valid advices.
Sure. A guy should be prepared to act if a girl is doing something noticeable and he's even a little curious about her.
But being reactive is not helpful by itself most of the time.
This forum constantly has posts from guys who spend their time not doing anything because they're so busy looking for signs. To the point where they miss opportunities that would have required some investigation, or that they let go because they didn't act at all while they were busy analyzing if they should.
____2____
As you have mentioned, many women are good at controlling themselves.
I didn't mention this.
____3____
Brute force rejection is only good for......
I never talked about this.
I said that guys need to go interact with people. That doesn't require brute force.
____4____
young men, like myself are coming to an impasse because there isnt a general rule book on how to act anymore.
This is nothing new. Back in 1997, things had been changing in our dating pools and it resulted in books like The Rules coming out for women, followed by the modern pickup movement spearheaded by guys like Style and Mystery.
We've been at this impasse for a while now. ;)
____5: Commentary on things others have added____
You can't control the way people react to you, and trying too hard to make sure you only get positive reactions is a sign of insecurity.
Agreed.
....no one gets good at this by avoiding rejection, they get good by embracing it.
Definitely.
Becoming confident is really all about getting to a point where you're indifferent to the way women react to you, whether positive or negative.
I think it's not so much indifference to "how women react," as it is being able to process it without taking it personally as a statement on one's own value. Aiming for being indifferent to how women react, could be taken to unhelpful places you might not have intended.
Like when Julian went around Japan sexually asssaulting women because he misinterpreted the cultural differences there to mean that he was getting clearance to go way overboard with his already rather flamboyant style of pickup.
Though you probably meant self-mastery and being able to take rejection in a way that's not personal.... not aiming for sociopathic behavior.
Just want to say, wow good job formatting, but i guess I see youre a mod, so that explains it.
Dont have the motivation to go over the points as we are arguing the same thing. Just wanted to clarify brute force as a figure of speech, meaning the advice you give to just make yourself approach and learn from that rather than waiting for the world to give you a sign, My comment was more relating to a beginner or casual learner wanting to get some pointers so they can get good in the dating game, for a thicker skin for rejection doesnt require to approach everyone if they dont have the emotional balls for it yet and can look for signs of openness, they can start their first steps.
you not mentioning women are good at controlling themselves you did, you said :"This approach overlooks the common situation of a girl not really showing signs until you interact with her". Its called paraphrasing so i can make my own points following on from yours. Because I agree with you.
Lastly just because the history is there, not everyone knows about it or has figured out what to look for. i was mentioning more on a greater sociocultural level, there is no longer, and havnt been for a long time, an oppressive cultural and social pressure to abide by. Its getting quite liberal, with acceptance of many cultures and ways of life. Doesnt mean there arent still cultural differences between countries, its just they dont come from a religious like upbringing for example.
[–]Moderatorrecyclablebanthas 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Just to clarify, I just like a good discussion about ideas. If we agree or disagree, is something I try to not to concern myself with. So.... it's all good! :)
you not mentioning women are good at controlling themselves you did, you said :"This approach overlooks the common situation of a girl not really showing signs until you interact with her".
Ah, but my point wasn't intended to be about self-control/controlling themselves. It was simply that, for a variety of reasons, girls don't always show "signs" that we recognize until we get in there and interact directly in some way.
Maybe they didn't notice the guy until he came up. Maybe they didn't realize a guy is attractive to them until they directly interact. Could be a bunch of reasons.
That's the risk of paraphrasing, especially without citing context. ;)
....the advice you give to just make yourself approach and learn from that rather than waiting for the world to give you a sign....
I should clarify that I view "approaching" in a rather different way than some here might. A lot of guys see "approaching" as this thing where the guy see someone and psychs himself up to go talk to her, or whatever.
I see this as too limited and an unhelpful way of framing it. People are actually approaching strangers ALL the time. Walking by people on the street. Standing in line with people. And so on. Everyone is approaching and being approached, all the time. The thing is that we're just not always opening.
People are usually in some sort of non-verbal interaction with people around them in public, already. It's just that we make things complicated and imagine that it's some huge step or invasion to merely say something to another person, without expectation. Maybe because they'd like to get a number, before they even say the first words. Expectations are an issue.
Doesnt mean there arent still cultural differences between countries
[–]Socialinception 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Well, Julien wasn't actually sexually assaulting women, he wasn't doing the "choke open" to strangers, it was women he knew, he was just doing it to get a shock reaction. It wasn't coming from a good place, but it wasn't sexual assault, it was just an inflated ego trying to get attention.
Right, that's what I meant.
[–]Moderatorrecyclablebanthas 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Julien wasn't actually sexually assaulting women
Definition of sexual contact includes sexually touching another person without that person's consent.
Julien doing things like forcing women's faces into his crotch, and forcibly pulling store clerks in for a kiss as his openers.
Whether he was doing it for "shock value" is beside the point.
[–]Socialinception 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
He said in an interview it wasn't really how he approached the women, he said they were his friends - thus implying consent.
Either way, though, it was an example of what happens when you lose touch with your sense of empathy. As much as I enjoyed his content back in the day, it was pretty fucked up and was basically teaching men to be sociopathic to get laid.
[–]Moderatorrecyclablebanthas 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
he said they were his friends - thus implying consent.
Interesting. So he claimed later that all the people he did those things to, were people he personally knew and it was staged? Do you have a link to that interview? I'd be interested to read or watch it.

That scandal really messed with Julien. Afterwards he completely left pickup and became a self-help guru saying more agreeable stuff. It was interesting to watch.

A good looking group of alpha guys will get looks/eye contact and women will find a way to put themselves near them. It’s a bad look for an alpha guy to go around and approach multiple women. I guess it depends where you fall on the spectrum of attractiveness as a guy. Just my 2 cents

No.... I'm commenting on how /u/Socialinception shifted the conversation away from concepts and made it about you, and then it was starting to turn into a dick measuring thing.
Which doesn't add much to the overall conversation.

It does matter who an idea comes from, a lot of people talk very authoritatively about game even though they have very little real-life experience with women.
When someone says that it makes you look bad to approach multiple women if you're not good looking or "alpha" - to me that's the kind of thinking that shouldn't go unchecked, someone could read that and use it as an excuse to not go out and meet women.
But hey, I can call out the idea instead of the person.
a lot of people talk very authoritatively about game even though they have very little real-life experience with women.
Sure. And it's a natural feeling. I fight my own urge to do this as well.
But I ask you, what good does a potentially long argument/flame war with someone who usually won't be convinced of his/her "wrongness," bring to the table for someone who has opened a discussion about approaching and when to approach, etc.?
I can call out the idea instead of the person.
Yep..... just suggesting that this is more constructive and also more likely to lead to less resistance.
I've seen discussions where people who would have otherwise listened to reason, dug their heels in and stubbornly held onto bad ideas because the other person threw some sort of personal shot in there.
(We seem to agree on the larger points though)
[–]Socialinception 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Well, the goal of such an argument is to make the person look like they don't know what they're talking about so that anyone who reads their opinion is less likely to take it seriously lol.
Really, the reason I react to people this way is because when I first learned about the game I was a super insecure guy who saw a lot of advice out there and took it seriously. But that advice was mostly terrible, and it just made me come across as even more insecure.
Some of the most popular dating coaches seem to have no idea what they're talking about. And that's reflected in the community itself.
In my local pickup group, there's only a few guy getting good results. Of 800 people, about 20 go out semi-regularly, and only maybe 3 "pull" semi-regularly. Most of the guys who do go out, don't approach much, they'll say things like, "Well, I don't want to be the creepy pickup guy, I'm just trying to make friends." or, "I'm doing social circle game, not cold approach."
This thinking is preventing these guys from getting better. I don't want people to listen to the kind of advice I listened to when I was new to game, because doing so added years to my learning curve unnecessarily.
[–]recyclablebanthas1 point 8 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
I feel you about the frustration. It's all good.
The problem with going at them, is that it opens you up for the very valid ad hominem criticism, because conversation about the person is changing the subject from the ideas that were under discussion.
So this sort of tactic might actually turn someone away from you and your argument.
Making the good arguments I've seen you here making on concepts, will already be of immense help to people without having to discredit them directly.
:)

You may be right, I'll keep this in mind.

[–]LimitedContributor 3 points4 points5 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I'm going to look into this. Some women may not even know if they want to be approach by you until you approach if your interesting. I know from experience.
[–]Zoidberg22 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
So some of this happens at the gym for me. The girm usually stares sometimes at me and we have eye contact and nothing happens. A few of these times I've spoken to them before but only just to ask how many sets are left. What should I do?
[–]singlecellfromearth 2 points3 points4 points 8 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Seems like we're in the same boat bud. I joined this subreddit to get advice/interpret what was happening in these situations. Often times there would be more than just eye contact though, however seeing the nuanced signals became easier the more information I read.I would hope there is someone more experienced than me in this regard, as I've only spoken to 3 /XX opportunities. Also regarding abundance mentality/reality; most people take this to mean a load of girls to have sex with. I'm very conservative in that area, and my goal is not to sleep with lots of women. My abundance mentality is about having lots of options; imo you also have attraction "windows" and a failure to escalate can move those options off the table (but don't worry you can get more).I've used two general "strategies" so far:
1) After you guys make mutual-positive eye contact I just say "Hello/hi" and wave, keeping my distance. Later on, she will look "fidgety" or when she appears less "busy" aka on her phone, or just looking around (usually on her around pass she'll look at you) then I walk over and make small talk. I actually copied this older guy who just starts a conversation with someone as if they were already talking/acquaintances. For example I went over and asked a girl if the seat next to her was free (clearly was), and then I said, "I'm trying to learn how to fly." She looks confused for a bit, I don't say anything and go grab some weights and on my way back I said, "Birds make it look so easy." Then she looks at me through the mirror (in front of us) while I do some flies and when that light bulb clicks in her head, I give a little smile and then I ask her what she's working out for. I'm not smooth and I'm introverted so I take my time, I learned awhile back that pace is mostly individually set, you don't have to be the classic 1000 miles a minute charmer.
2) My favorite/easiest thing to do, which is convenient because of my gym is: There's a workout area which is the main floor, and then above it is a smaller stretching section that is visible from the bottom. So accidentally I found that some girls after playing those "approach me" games, would either go up there first or follow me up there. Its a smaller/more private area, and generally there are less people there. I always make sure to set my space at least a few yards away, (don't wanna start any stranger danger bells). However when there are less people watching/closer proximity, girls are much more inclined to start being more "obvious" here. One of the shyest girls at the gym was stretching near me, and we kind of play the eye-dancing game -- she ups the ante by moving her mat right in front of me (from ~3 yards to my left to ~2-3 feet in front of me) and she proceeds to do an extremely difficult yoga pose. I can tell she hasn't done it in awhile because a lot of her stabilizer muscles are shaking. So I make a comment saying, "That looks really difficult, how long did it take you to learn how to do that?" Followed it up by asking her to show me.
Now I realize I'm much more opportunistic than deterministic in talking to girls at the gym, but I think it helps too because its like a social watering hole, and people do gossip/take note. I've had different girls try to get my attention because I DIDN'T show interest in every female that was vying for attention. The workers at the gym (some of whom are potential candidates) also take note so thats a part of the reason I try to be more discrete.
[–]IslanderWolf 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
so thats a part of the reason I try to be more discrete.
As we are talking about a social circle enviroment and I just creat a post about it so I'll give my take on that. However me approach might not suits you as you said on the beginning your goal is not to sleep with a lot of women. Mine neither, but it still might still be looser than yours, but I'm brazilian so how not to love'em all?.
Anyway, I now embrace be seeing as a sexual guy, and this means that girls expect me to pursue them somehow. Atm I have probably flirted somehow with every girl I've talked to in Uni, even if it was just pumping up the vibe 60year style with 'I want to eat you' looks, even with the girls that have bf. Some of than I even asked out and I got 'rejected' (like in a 'not now' way, it wasnt 'no you are creepy' way cause when I do it I had already sensed attraction obviously), and I still treat them the same after that. The thing is that I seldom hit hard or pump up the vibe when there is people around, but on the other hand I'll pump my flirts a lot as there are fewer ppl and ppl more trustful to the girl around. And even though gossip will spread and they will talk to their closer friends about you, it will add up to the fact that you were social savvy to do it smoothly and like more privately, so she wouldn't feel embarassed/like a slut (remember you are in a setting that everybody knows everybody), and the fact that, working it or not, you are still cool everytime they seem them and treat they the same way, being it in front of others or while you are more private. And if you rejections doesn't afect you at all in a social setting, like you dont change behavior around girls that rejected you and if you dont change behavior around girls were hooking up with and you two are not fucking anymore, than you will be:
seeing as being an abundant alpha guy as you dont take rejections harshly and is cool about it, and you see your rejections being each time more pleasnt, like girls will literaly giggle and say sorry for turning you down, cause in a social setting like that you usualy push forward after you already got good responses while flirting and talking and etc, so it is like warm approach.
that see sex as no big deal (as you dont act weird near girls you had a sexual relation with), it will easy it up a lot for girls that would hook up with you but fear the social pressure in that enviroment that my come afterwards if any of you start to act weird. And there is times where the girl WILL act weird, but you being chill and cool will easy her up A LOT and after a while she will mostly be chill about it too and will again act normal like it never happened.
However I seldom do that in front of other girls, so they wont feel pressured:
So the fact that you are savvy enough to do not do it in front of people, that you do not kiss and tell and that stuff will also help a lot for girls being confortable in hooking up with you lowering their slut defence. Rumor will still spread, but as you do not kiss and tell and are fun and flirtious with most girls, there will be confusions like girls saing you are fucking a girl that you are not, girls are mean man, you have no idea the stuff that they came up with.

How about this: instead of obsessing over minute potential signs that she may or may not want you to approach her - you just approach her. Who cares? As RSD Julien says 'calibrate after the fact (after the approach)'.
It's such a low-value mindset... You may as well just assume she open for the approach and go for it.
[–]papi1368 1 point2 points3 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly, personality is also a part of the equation, even if she didn't get hooked on your looks, your chill-mysterious personality might be the reason of you pulling that night.

"How about this: instead of obsessing over minute potential signs that she may or may not want you to approach her - you just approach her. Who cares? "
Alright, where in this post did I mention or refer to obsessing? Being socially observant of your surroundings is a part of social skill/grace (I would also notice if ANY stranger does this to me, guys included). This is not a guide on HOW to approach women. Just read the title, don't read into what isn't there.
"It's such a low-value mindset... You may as well just assume she open for the approach and go for it."Pretty sure these things happen more frequently if you have a high-value mindset. We should probably avoid the mindset of projecting why "we" might do something onto an action other people have. I am not a PUA or did I ever have the intention of approaching loads of girls. I'm just putting out some pattern-recognition of behaviors for those looking to interpret similar signals. I am not advising to LOOK for these signals, but to be aware that when these happen, it likely means something.
[–]ClownPrince6 0 points1 point2 points 8 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I don't get what your saying re: we should "avoid the mindset of projecting why "we" might do something onto an action other people might have"...that sentence doesn't make sense.
Either way, I would suggest that it's best not to put too much weight on the girls signals at the start of the interaction (or before the interaction has even begun!) and instead focus on her reactions as it's happening.
He is in the gym, it is a social setting, with girls he is going to encounter everyday. It goes a little different than night game, you'll get burnt pretty quickly if you do cold approach on a few girls on a social setting regardless I've seen it happening with my wing man, it was not that cold approaching everybody but being too direct at times he shouldn't, it took a while and he recovered from that.
....What are you talking about? Who is "he"?....(who actually cares haha).

2) Any increase in movement is a thing, because we're wired to notice movement. She plays with hair, with some accessory, with her bag. She shifts weights or moves her feet. She smiles when you look at her, even if she's talking to somebody else and not looking at you.
3) Also she tries to get herself alone, and she tries to stay in your cone of vision. In the long term: she goes to a spot you're often found at (your table at the library, or your corner in the garden, or your part of the bus).
