I've been doing this for a while whenever I can, some tips from my experience.

Try to approach people open to talk, the chest in particular has to be open, not covered by arms or items, look for people with a good posture and a positive mood. Try to be open as well, the less you're threatening, the better you will be welcomed.
"Hi" is great starter for a conversation. You can follow with a request or a question unique about your interlocutor (Is he using a skateboard? Ask him to show you some trick. Is she reading a book? Ask her what's so interesting about it.) Open questions are engaging (and build a good relationship if you know how to listen properly) and small requests will make people develop more simpathy for you.
Asking "how are you?" is a good follower after the hi, because the typical answer ("fine/good/well/okay") triggers a brain response which improves the mood. Which is good for you! You can also dig deeper and ask your interlocutor to be more specific, asking if he is feeling happy, positive, content or satisfied. This can be uncomfortable for some people.
Be attractive. This is really easy, 3H: hygiene, haircut, how you dress. Also, keep an eye on similiraties. We perceive better what is similar to us. The rarest is the similarity, the better you'll be perceived.
When you see that the conversation is not going anywhere or you're not feeling comfortable, just cut it. You don't need to explain yourself, anyway you'll never see that person again.
The first times will be awkward/uncomfortable, but keep going! At a certain point you'll see an interesting person and will be able to approach it instantly. Keep us updated on your progress! ✌️👌👍

Maybe just stay with the hello; introducing yourself makes it a whole thing.

And keep moving, don’t do it where people might feel “trapped” (on a line, on a bus).

Make eye contact, smile lightly, say hi, done.

You should try and push yourself as much as you can. Just try to stay as long as you can in the conversation. It can greatly help you out with conversation skills and social anxiety.

Ive tried this but one important thing ive realized and learned is that you should not forcing yourself to approach people to be sociable. You need first to be busy with your own self/life etc.. because it is easy to talk to a lot of strangers but without you as a whole person is useless.

Be genuinely interested in how their day is going and not treat it as a social exercise or trying to get a positive reaction. It will come off fake and contrived otherwise. People are generally more intuitive than we think and Can read disingenuous behavior.

You’re already overthinking it.

Walk up, say hey, and ask them about something they’re wearing.

You’d be surprised how open people are to talking when they don’t feel like someone is trying to get something from them

Try instead of introducing yourself, ask their name, then "nice to meet you ____" without giving your name. It is a good way to gauge interest. If they are interested they will ask your name. If not they won't.
