I’m standing in line to get my essay printed before it’s due. Suddenly, she turns around; she has blond hair, green eyes, tight jeans and a tan leather jacket. Go talk to her my mind urges me on. But there’s another person in line in front of us. I accept circumstances, stand up straight and clear my mind.

The line is moving very slowly and my essay is due in 40 minutes so it takes effort to remain calm. The middle eastern women in front of me sighs loudly and takes off. Now you have no excuse. I stand directly beside her with the desk in front of us. “So what are you waiting for?”

She goes on to say that she’s picking up a readings package for her philosophy course. I say that I just had my philosophy of sex and love class. She asks what specifically it’s about and I tell her that today was actually very interesting, we talked about the idea that: Love is when we give people high value.

To move the conversation on to her I ask what her course booklet is for. Her green eyes look up and stare into me. She goes on to say that she’s in fifth year and doing honors in philosophy. I love philosophy so I am very interested at this point. We begin to talk about the philosophical ideas in her class – “So, how can I help you?”

The cashier interrupts and I break off the conversation a bit too fast and focus on the cashier. I go back to talking to her after I’ve brought up the files. I know we’re going to be both leaving soon, but I can’t let her go. I can’t think of a smooth way to ask for her number. She begins to leave “It was nice to meet you” I approach her “Do you have a number or something?” I can see in her eyes that she enjoys that I asked.

“I do. But I have a boyfriend. So I think that would send the wrong message” I smile and say that’s okay. After she leaves her look keeps playing in my mind. I feel unstoppable after working up the guts to talk to something so beautiful.

Cons:

  • I feel like I should have said to her “I just need to print this quickly” when the cashier interrupted us. Instead of turning my attention on him so fast.

  • I should’ve asked for her number during mid-interaction. With something more like “What? We need to meet up for coffee later forsure.”

  • When she said she had a boyfriend, I should have teased her in someway to still and get her number. I probably would have been fine with just being friends with her and something might happen later.

Pros:

  • Working up the guts to talk to her and asking for her number when I wasn’t having a great day make feel so much more alive.

  • Green eyes.

  • It made me realize how easy it can be to talk when you have commonalities.

  • Seeing that she enjoyed being hit on felt great.
