Cold reads work well. Instead of asking if she plays sports, simply say, "You look like you've played some soccer." It doesn't have to be based on anything. Just throw it out there. It'll open the door to a sports-related conversation.

You don't want to keep asking questions. You need to make these answers you get from your first few question develop into a conversation.

First you obviously don't know the person/girl, you have to ask certain question. Have opinions on these and make these answers develop into a conversation. Once you have a conversation you can develop connections from the similarities or even differences that you share. Then go from there. Don't sit all night pelting the girl with questions, you'll come off as creepy/obnoxious

You're not asking the right question here. You don't want to ask a bunch of questions, and you don't want to make a bunch of statements. You want to have a conversation, and that's not a series of questions and statements.

The key to having a better conversation is not about what you say...it's about what you hear. Listen to what people say, and bounce off of it. Tell relevant (short!) stories when the subject turns to something you have a funny story about. Thread various topics in occasionallly and change the subject frequently, so you always have something to bounce back to when the conversation lags.

Practice having conversations without purpose. i.e. with people you don't want to have sex with. Try to make them laugh now and then, try to be aware of their emotional state, try to provide value rather than taking it.
