I've had this problem multiple times while practicing escalation; A girl and I will be having a great conversation, things going smoothly, then she gets on a rant about something bad that's happened to her. I usually say "Sorry to hear that" (verbatim) and try my damnedest to steer the conversation back in another direction. Any suggestions on a better strategy?
