I'd like to add that you should only do these things if they actually interest you. If you are not interested in the documentary don't bother watching it. Don't just do it because you want to be able to say something interesting. Do it because it interests you and talk about it because you think it's fun to talk about.

If you don't do this you will just come off as fake and you will be wasting your time.

This doesn't exactly answer your question, but I feel like you already have what it takes to hold an interesting conversation with a chick.

I've found that it's more about listening. And I'm not only referring to women. I've had the same experience with every person in my life. All these people think I'm interesting and simply love talking to me, even though if you were to analyse a typical conversation with me, I'd be sitting there quietly for about 70-90% of the time, listening. And when I pick up on something I want to take the direction of the conversation in, I just respond normally in a way that would achieve that.

Bottom line (for me, ahem) is that people generally love talking about themselves infinitely more than they like hearing shit coming from someone else. I just sit and listen intently, let them do all the talking and throw in my 2 cents every now and again, and BAM at the end of the night he/she says "I really think you're an awesome person to have a conversation with" in some way or another.

Being good at conversation isn't about telling someone all the thing you know. Being good at conversation is about listening and drawing the other person out. You should learn to ask pertinent questions and how to be fully engaged in what the other party is saying on different levels.

I find that asking myself what's interesting about this person helps a lot. Stop thinking about what you're going to say and just listen to the other person. Stop trying to impress them with how much stuff you know. No one ever goes home and says OMG I met this guy who know so much about Game of Thrones, I was soaking wet by the end of our conversation. If you listen to her, ask questions about her and get her to talk about her feelings, while being playful with solid eye contact, you'll melt even the coldest hearts.

TL;DR: no one is impressed with how much you know. Learn to listen and conversation thread.

You're on the right track, but I think you're ready for the next step, which is to be an interesting thing, rather than just consuming media about them.

Go out there and do stuff. Make things. Play an instrument. Travel. Meet people.

Most importantly, and I wish I'd bookmarked the OP where I found this (very recently, like in the last month)--tell yourself to pay attention to what's happening so you can tell people about it later on!

No kidding. The dumbest shit will entertain people. Like one day I was driving home from the store and I ran over a plastic shopping bag that was full of something. I looked in my rear view mirror and it looked like green jello flying through the air. It got all over the windshield of the guy behind me. That is a small, unremarkable event, but I have gotten so many laughs out of telling that story. It's remembering the little things that help you be interesting and relatable.

theres a couple great podcasts out there for listening to really interesting stuff. i try to keep up with stuffyoushouldknow while i drive and it does make for some interesting conversation topics.

Good stuff, but I don't think it should be a foundation except.

just knowing your local city's main website for events (it is a great feeling to know all of the options for what is going on in a weekend, and people are impressed with someone who offers unique suggestions that break the mold and jolt people out of their comfortable bar/setting)

Develop passions, have new experience, have new friends, do stuff. Talk about you. Talk about them. This should be your bread and butter for conversations.
