Directness is actually more powerful when done right. Saying 'I find you attractive' flat out is solid, but the delivery is everything. Slow down, hold eye contact, let the silence breathe after you say it. Don't fill the gap. Most guys panic and kill the moment by talking over it.

The mistake you want to avoid is making it sound like you're seeking validation. You're not telling her she's attractive hoping she agrees, you're telling her because you mean it and you don't need her to do anything with that information. Try flirting through physical touch and eye contact. Don't be afraid to eye fuck a girl from time to time. Honestly from my extensive experience, you show up, she sees you, and she either just likes you or not. There isn’t much you can do to convince her to like you, if she looks at you and decides she doesn’t.

Depends on what you mean with "intense". If you're staring, it can easily come off as creepy. But a bit prolonged eye contact and a smile goes a long way. Not all women are good at decoding signals and won't register subtle attempts at flirting. This goes for me as well, which means that a more direct approach where a man states his intention of getting to know me clearly, is much more likely to pique my interest.

Which again means that saying stuff like "hey, you caught my attention, you look like an interesting person" can open a door, subtle flirting can't.

Be grounded. Hold frame. Make jokes, tease, and etc. also make her feel understood don’t necessarily agree but make her feel like you understand where she’s coming from. Also let her do most of the talking
