Hi everyone, I’d like an external opinion on a situation I’m going through and how to interpret what happened.
A little about me: I’m 38 years old, not a model, but a good-looking guy. I ended a long-term relationship in May, and I’m just now getting back into the dating world.
Last Saturday (8 days ago), I went on a date with a 32-year-old woman I met on a dating app. I didn’t have high expectations going in, mainly because I’m pretty selective—both in relationships and with people in general.
We met at 5:30 PM and went to see a contemporary art exhibition I had suggested, which we both enjoyed. Once it ended (around 7 PM), I suggested we grab an aperitivo.
I’m a little rusty, but I have to say, the evening was amazing. I had that rare feeling of meeting someone you feel like you’ve known forever. We talked about everything—openly, without filters, and without trying too hard to impress each other. We discussed past relationships (she, too, had ended a long-term relationship with high expectations), future plans (we both want a family and kids), and as the evening went on, I noticed growing interest from her (and myself), including small physical gestures. She told me that this was her second date since the summer (the first was in July), but at the time, she wasn’t ready for anything serious.
Around 10 PM, she asked if I was hungry and wanted to get dinner. We went to a restaurant, and this part of the evening was just as enjoyable: laughing, joking, flirting, and discovering even more shared interests. Everything felt so natural.
When I dropped her off at home, it was past midnight. As we were saying goodbye, I kissed her. I admit I felt a bit rusty and awkward, and maybe the kiss was a bit forced on my part—I wanted to do it, but I had to push myself past the hesitation. In any case, she reciprocated: first with a light kiss, then a deeper one, including a playful nibble on my lower lip. It was brief and maybe not perfectly timed, but it felt like a good moment.
Before we said goodbye, I told her openly that I’d like to see her again. I know this wasn’t the most “strategic” move and that I could’ve played it cooler, but I was feeling great and didn’t want to hide it.
The next day, since I hadn’t heard anything back, I sent her a voice message asking if I had made her uncomfortable or come on too strong.
She replied later that evening with a long message, explaining that she had taken the day to reflect. She told me she’d had a great time but didn’t feel the spark she’s looking for. She didn’t want to keep me hanging or waste my time, but she offered to stay friends.
If I hadn’t been on that date, I’d simply think she wasn’t interested enough (which happens, and it’s no big deal). But the signals I picked up during the evening seemed so clear that her response caught me off guard. Plus, it was always her idea to extend the evening (which I hadn’t expected to last that long or go that well). I know I’m out of practice, but I’ve never misread a situation like this before, and I truly didn’t see this outcome coming.
I then asked her if she thought it might make sense to take things slow, without rushing, to see if we could work as a couple. I explained that I don’t believe in or expect “love at first sight.”
She replied that she wasn’t putting me in the “friendzone” but still didn’t see any potential for a relationship.
At that point, I told her I genuinely liked her as a person and would be happy to build a sincere friendship with her (which was the truth).
She concluded by giving me compliments, including some about my appearance (e.g., my eyes, which are objectively one of my best features 😅), and more. End of story.
I’ve shared this situation with some friends, and opinions have been mixed: • Some have told me to just let it go and move on. • Others said it’s the typical thing people say to avoid hurting someone (and I’d probably think the same if I hadn’t been there that night). • Some believe she just isn’t ready for a relationship. • Others think I may have pushed too hard and, considering her past (a long relationship that ended badly), she might need more time. They suggest waiting a couple of weeks and then inviting her out again, with no big expectations, to see if there’s any hope.
Personally, I would’ve liked to keep getting to know her to see if something could develop. That said, I wouldn’t mind building a genuine friendship either, because I found her to be a beautiful person who shares many similarities with me.
There are two things I’m sure about, though:
1. I don’t want to develop feelings for someone who can’t return them. 2. I don’t want to offer friendship with ulterior motives—it has to be genuine and selfless.
What do you think about all this? I’m open to advice, and you can roast me if you want!
