i was driving back from a party a few months ago and i realized i had no idea if my conversations were actually good or if women were just being polite. no feedback. ever. you say something, get a laugh, but was it real? no way to know.
so i opened chatgpt and told it to roleplay as a woman i just met at a bar. be realistic. don't be nice. rate what i say.
problem #1: chatgpt is way too nice
it was decent for 5 minutes. then i hit the wall. chatgpt is way too fucking collaborative. i kept telling it to stop being agreeable and it wouldn't. i'd say something completely average and it'd go "that's a great point! i love how you think about things." no. no woman you just met talks like that. if you're boring she'll check her phone. if you push too hard too early she'll shut you down. if you're being weird she'll find a reason to leave. chatgpt just cheers you on no matter what. useless for getting better.
solution #1: make the AI not nice
i'm a developer, so i built a voice conversation app where you actually talk out loud and she responds in real time. not text. talking. and she's not agreeable by default. she starts a little guarded, short answers, not giving you much. if you're just running through interview questions ("so what do you do? where are you from?"), she gets bored. just like in real life. there's different scenarios - meeting someone new at a bookshop, a coffee shop, a first date, a phone call to set up a date. you get live coaching tips during the conversation and a scorecard after.
that fixed the "too nice" problem. but then i hit the next wall.
problem #2: real conversations have emotions that shift
this is the thing nobody talks about. when you meet someone new, she doesn't know you. she's not invested. she's a little guarded. that's normal. the whole point of a good conversation is making her feel comfortable enough to open up. you're not performing lines - you're reading the room and responding to how she's feeling in the moment. if she's skeptical you don't push harder, you pull back. if she laughs at something, that's your cue to go deeper. every real conversation has this arc from "who is this guy" to "ok this person is actually interesting."
the first version of my app didn't do any of that. same vibe from start to finish. just like chatgpt.
solution #2: i made the AI change emotion mid-conversation
this is the part where i ruined my life for 3 months. i had to figure out how to make an AI actually shift its emotional state based on what you say. that's not a thing that exists out of the box. i ended up building this architecture where the character starts guarded and then depending on how you talk to her, she either warms up and opens up, or stays cold. or ends the conversation. it's not scripted. if you're reading the moment right and being genuinely interesting, she gradually opens up. if you're being boring or pushy, she pulls away.
the part i didn't expect
i also modeled an argument scenario. like a full blown "you fucked up and she's angry" conversation where she's not letting you off easy. i showed that one to a friend of mine. he just sat there listening to me go back and forth with this AI and his face went pale. he said it gave him ptsd from his last relationship. thats coz the AI just wouldn't let it go :). that's when i knew i was onto something.
it's free: tryvibecoach.com - you get 5 sessions on signup, no card needed.
have you ever tried to actually practice a conversation before a date? or does everyone just wing it every time?
