Most LTRs are going to start with sex early in the relationship, rather than an extended friendship. It's a basic PUA concept that it's easier to start with a sexual encounter and then move on to whatever type of relationship you want, than to start a relationship and then have sex after it's already set up. Think about it, any LTR you want will have a strong sexual component, so you have to establish early that this is a priority.

There are ways to signal that you are looking for an LTR. The way you approach a seduction sets the woman's expectations for the level of relationship. If you go for a quick seduction, you're setting her expectations that you aren't very serious, but if you take it slower and seduce her over the course of 2 or 3 dates, she will spend more time evaluating you for long term suitability (this may not work in your favor).

You talk about shopping with them, you will be the guy they will talk about shopping with. They might even ask your opinion trends.

You need to set the tone of the relationship from the get-go, friendship or otherwise.

I'm going to repeat a little of what the others said above me, but the do have a very good point. If you start with the intention to be her friend...you'll going to end up just as her friend (a.k.a. 'friend-zoned). Plus by the time you realize this 'friend' is what you're looking for as a romantic interest, you probably made your efforts even more difficult. So in my opinion, going with what you friend is saying is only going to make things more painful and more difficult than if you start out with the intent of having a girlfriend. In addition, if you are going to be going after a friend to be a romantic interest, you better be willing to lose that friendship if it goes south or at the very least a very awkward interactions after you present your interest and she rejects it.

I would have to say that using these techniques will get you what you want; an long term relationship. The way I like to think about these seduction techniques is meant to set you apart from the rest of the crowd. By setting yourself as an exception, it makes you more attractive. This will probably not make it so you can get the girl of your dreams after the first try, but it'll start getting you more access to different women to start finding that girl who is 'date worthy'. You may want to look up some inner game post on Seddit, however that is just my suggestion.

Unfortunately it doesn't work like the films, when a guy and a girl are friends since childhood, the girl has a series of bad boyfriends while the boy is secretly in love with the girl. Then boom! she is in love with the boy from her childhood.

You should probably try to find someone outside of your friend group. If you are already friends with women in your friend group, you have to ask yourself why you aren't already dating them? The reason is there even if you don't know it.

Don't be afraid of pick-up. It doesn't mean that you have to become a player.

For me, I have noticed it really depends on the personality. For the average person, yes, it's better to make a move in the beginning and work from there. Whereas the circle of friends I know who are less wild and smarter than the average person seem to prefer the friend first method. I believe it's because most people go with their feelings and instincts first, acting more on impulse. Those that have been taught to put some thought into things before making a decision prefer to familiarize themselves with the person before deciding. I personally prefer girls in the latter category, because I hate lack of intelligence.

Friendzones aren't an inescapable blackhole either. I've have a pair of friends who've known each other since elementary school. They've been steady in a long term relationship after freshman year of college. It's been going 1 year and strong. It's still a longshot though, and if they haven't shown interest in the first year or so, then it would require some overhaul of your personality.
