Justifying asking for a number?

Both is fine. You don't have to add anything else. At least let her answer before you start justifying yourself and don't just ramble on. Just make you're coming off confident.

Now get out there and try what works best for you.

I've always found that asking for a number is most natural when I have already seeded an event or thing that I want to invite her on. Then asking for the number becomes a logical way to set up the next meeting, rather than a big thing.

Don't ask, just say "I want to get together sometime". Or "I wish we could hang out another time" Don't anticipate an answer, after that rock like you are about the leave (assuming this Is a number close") leave a slight pause to let it sink in, she usually gives you her number, if she doesn't continue the conversation and repeat.

If she doesn't willingly give it, she's not interested

You shouldn't be taking their number unless they are enthusiastically into the idea of a date.

This is probably why you are getting a ton of flakes / numbers that don't go anywhere.... you can't just get their number, you have to timebridge the date (because you've already sexualized the conversation before getting #, right???) and have them buy into it....

the number is a formality man, not an end goal.

Just today I had a brief conversation with a girl I occasionally say hi to. At the end, I just said, "hey, actually can I get your number?", trying to be really casual. She laughed, probably a nervous laugh, but I wasn't worried, I kind of stammered at the end, and said something like "I mean, why not..just like...(shrug)". She gave me her number, but I think I came off as pretty awkward. Which I am, but that's besides the point.
