These are two concepts I really cannot seem to get my head around. They seem to contradict each other in almost every situation I'm in. I think the most common example of this is when I'm dealing with a flake. Half the advice I get tells me to forget her to avoid coming off as needy, and the other half suggests I try again because I won't get anywhere without persistence.

Could someone give me some examples of each? And where to draw the line?

Another area I seem to have trouble with is being yourself vs. being a pushover. I'm naturally a nice guy, but I have established my principles and really try to stick to them to avoid being a pushover. The problem is, I really like helping people. I do it for a living. If any of my friends called me in the middle of the night asking for help, I'm there with no questions asked. So obviously, if a girl I like asks for the same reasons, I'm going to help out, not out of desperation, but as a testament to my character. However, I often see this type of behavior shot down as "beta" and "being a pushover". What do you think?
