"Hi" with the biggest most genuine smile you can muster is my favorite. Then I just immediately launch into a story as if I have already been talking to her for 10 minutes. Keep the story under 1 minute. If she likes you, she starts talking when you finish your story.

As far as some of your questions - Ukraine, Trump, Taxes, Jihadi girls... those are all in the political realm and can be toxic if you can't exit that line of conversation within a minute or so. Yes it engages people, but you never know people's views or leanings and they can feel EXTREMELY passionate about their own views. These are as easily a conversation killer as a starter.

If you need openers, /u/napsandsnacks really gave you some good ones. You don't need them though. Me: Hi (big smile) Her: Hi Me: I was out kayaking/hiking/birdwatching/being a dork/whatever today and I felt this awesome appreciation for my life. Ever get that feeling? Her: Yes Me: I don't know why I was thinking about that, it's the first thing that came out of my mouth. Anyway, people should appreciate what they have more shouldn't they? Her: Sure Me: Well, what about your life is interesting?

It's a bit scripted and I'm rarely on script, but it conveys comfort as you just launched into talking to her like you already know her and she should reciprocate if your frame is solid (body language, body language, body language!!!!). Do not hover or block her path, make sure you aren't pointing the front of your body towards her, be sideways and hold your shoulders high as though you could walk away at any second. Keep smiling. When she says something you like or can relate to, touch her arm, her shoulder, her back/side gently and smile.

I always try to say the most off the wall shit that I can. If it's during the day it's a bit calmer. But at night, I act a straight up fool and it fucking works.

Don't try too hard, just make it seem natural. I usually just start with "hey you seem like a pretty cool/interesting person, what's your name?" then just take it from there.

You are thinking too much and trying too hard. Also, avoid close ended questions or questions (anything that requires a yes/no answer). Some of those are too out there...or just not normal conversation topics for people you don't know (Jesus, Trump, jihadi girls, etc).

Napsandsnacks openers (in the comment thread) are better.

My Crayola kid opener:

“Hey, that blue is amazing on you. What shade is it, aqua? C’mon, you can tell me, you were a Crayola kid. Had the 128 box with the sharpener?”

I also make ridiculous/funny accusations. Girls with laptops just outbid me on Ebay on fuzzy bunny slippers. Girls with cell phones are playing Angry Birds and “This is an Angry Birds free zone…there was an incident 2 months ago and it was ugly, but you can play Candy Crush.”

If party --> I'll be your date! Let's go!/Why didn't you invite me!?
if work --> Why do you look so pretty for work? Are you a model? What type of work do you do?
if job interview --> Ok let's do a practice run. Would you say you work better in groups or on your own? It says here in your resume you were fired from your last job for always stapling reports on the top right hand corner instead of the left. Are your from Japan or something?
