Honestly, I've done this before (well, I touched bases with the girl that ended up soft nexting me)

Basically, at the time I was still somewhat fresh out of a LTR and more or less was putting off dealing with my issues assuming trying to date again would sort them.

We went out a few times to get a bite, chatted a lot, but ultimately it didn't pan out. After getting my shit together, reached out and appologized for being pretty lack luster and explained my piece.

She was really appreciative that I reached out, we chatted some and now months later we are actually pretty decent friends. Grab a bite occasionally and chat pretty often (though strictly platonic, it's still nice to have her around as a friend)
