Well, Jonathan Goldsmith is an accomplished actor and a pretty interesting guy. Of course, he's playing up the character thing in the AMA but the dude is actually a well traveled, distinguished gentleman.

I'm all for 'fake it til you make it' but goddamnit reddit, don't try to act like you're The Most Interesting Man in the World when you're not interesting.

Don't be 'in character' because you're not that person.

Next thing you know, the people in this sub are gonna go out and pretend like they're the MIMitW by saying clever (read: lame and stupid) phrases, and then freak the fuck out when they run out of ideas because they're not actually interesting themselves.

When talking to anyone for the first time, the only meaningful thing they'll take away from the conversation is their impression of your character.

Right on the money...

Since you are in complete control of who and what you are, you are in control of your character...and therefore able to influence what people think of you. There is nothing stopping you from being The Most Interesting Man in the World. You only have to believe it about yourself, and become it.

One thing is to be inspired and try to become it, another very different is to delude yourself and pretend to be something you are not. I think the "fake it till you make it" motto only works when it's about changing your attitude and confidence, but it won't give you any value you don't already have.
