Thanks all, tried it out a little today and was mostly successful. Just said whatever occurred, when I could muster the gumption. No one laughed at me, hit me, or anything!

Will continue blabbing whatever random crap comes to mind and report back.

Start with small talk, if something interesting comes up segway into that branch of the conversation.

Do you get the same cashier all the time? Make the small talk a routine, then someday break the routine by going into a more interesting subject and see if you get something positive out of it.

You'll be fine. The best advice is to just be friendly and observant. Take a long look at your surroundings, pick one thing, and say something about it. At a convenience store line, glance at the tabloids and say, "sigh I love America..." and shake your head.

More good advice is to just start saying random crap. You gotta crawl before you can walk, and you'll be falling all the time at first. Basically it doesn't matter what you say, just keep your head up and keep trying. Never think that you've crashed and burned, just shrug it off and move on. You'll be fine.

"Busy day", "Awesome weather", "What was with that guy?", "How you doing today?", "Can't wait to eat that chex mix!", etc.

I always ask cab drivers what their longest/weirdest fare was, heard a lot of awesome stories that way.

I for the first time ever managed to talk to as many people as possible in one night this past Friday. I started by telling the people I was with that I planned on saying HI to everybody. This forced me to hold up to what I promised myself and my friends. I started by just saying "Hey, Hows your night?" while walking past people. Slowly my confidence began to build and I managed to get enough balls to get a convo started in the short time walking next to people. This progressed to stopping and actually talking to people.

This proved to me that I could talk to everyone and not be some weird person. Now I have no problem talking to anybody and everybody. The key is to make sure others know of what you are planning to do so that you have an outside force to assist you in the beginning.
