I often see people trying all these strategies to approach girls on the bus, or subway, or in other similar situations. The easiest solution I have found is to just carry a pack of gum around with you, whip it out, then after a second notice the person sitting next to you and offer them a piece, it's a great ice breaker and I have found great success with it.
