Try going for something that doesn't require either of you to spend too much money. If its a first date a couple drinks are fine and that way you can relax and get to know each other. I used to invite girls to the park and share a cheap bottle of wine. If she is a good girl she will offer to split on the second date. But even if she doesn't this shouldn't be an issue. I usually make the first few dates fun and low cost to both people. Women usually prefer these because formal dinner dates can be stressful and awkward.

Find cool, local pub close to where you live (if possible). Get to know the staff a bit. Learn to make a few chick-friendly cocktails.

Take her out for a couple of drinks and charm her. Should be easy with a small amount of booze and a place where you have established social proof. Invite her back to your place for a nightcap.

Bullshit, really.

The point is not that one way is the "right way." It's that YOU need to decide for yourself what kind of interaction you want, with what kind of girl. If you want a traditionally minded, old-fashioned sort of girl, then you'll want one that expects you to pay for shit.

I don't like that, personally, so I don't date women like that.

Ah, there's your mistake. You don't ask if you're going to split it. The bill just comes and you delay a few seconds getting your money. This allows you to see whether they even intend to pick up their share. They either will, or they won't. They might even ask how much theirs is.

On this note, don't suggest meeting up with someone for more than drinks or coffee, at first. I guess you're already observing this? If so, you'll know that it keeps the costs down if she decides to stick you for the bill.

Then you screen them out if this matters to you. I hung out with a girl who stuck me with an expensive bill once. What got me about it, was that SHE is the one who drove the bill up.

I never spoke to her again.

Here's the thing. If you rush to pay for it, a lot of people won't argue. Not in this economy. So don't rush. You don't have to be awkwardly slow. Just don't rush.

Just be friends with her if you don't want to pay. Its male privilege to pay for the date. You're not buying loyalty you are showing you are in charge, its worth the few bucks.
