Make vague comments about something

Can you give an example? Because depending on the situation, they probably just mean "nothing".

Either way, no need to dwell on it. You can probably just move on and talk about something else.

I think, generally speaking, when the individuals responds, whether male or female, by saying "oh nothing," or something among the lines of that, they are self-conscious. They are afraid of how you may or may not respond to their behavior.

I would say they want to talk about it, but the costs of you interpreting in a way that would inflict somewhat of rejection are higher than the benefits of discussing the topic at hand with you.

It depends on the situation, but if we're talking about a situation where they seem annoyed then I usually take is as a sign that

She feels something is wrong or otherwise "off"
She doesn't feel "safe" saying what she's feeling for whatever reason She likely wants you to demonstrate genuine interest or openness to the conversation before the conversation starts, which will make her feel safer saying what she's thinking.

Assuming you want to find out what's really going on, I might say something like, "Ok, I'll take you at your word. I really want to know if something's up, though, and I don't want you to think I'm being oblivious. I also don't want you to feel like sharing those feelings are a burden or an inconvenience to me. Whatever you're feeling is worth sharing. When you say it like that, though, it leaves me with the nagging feeling that something is up but you're uncomfortable telling me what. That makes me feel less secure about our relationship and creates a feeling of increased distance between us that I don't think is healthy." I'd say this gently and calmly, ideally while smiling and touching her in a comforting way (hug, hand hold, etc.).

This is obviously the sort of thing you'd say if you were in a LTR or the beginnings of one. It'd be inappropriate or too intense in other contexts.
