That's definitely ideal...
I think that it naturally switches back and forth as interest increases in reality though.

Each gender is attempting to balance investment, not too much and not too little. Enough to show that they want them but not enough to come across as being too forward.

In the beginning, it's mostly the guy who's chasing. He's asking for her number, and she has all the power to shut him down. He's calling/texting her and she can ignore it if she wants to. He's setting up the date, and that's where things begin to change because then they're both trying to prove their value to each other.

After the initial first date, it seems to sway back and forth depending on who's invested more. At this point, it's important as a guy to actively, but indirectly, prove your value. Abundance theory, getting her to invest and qualify more, and push/pull. Most of the time, you have to get the other person chasing, it doesn't happen naturally unless they're already attached.

Eventually, most girls choose among those who hit on them (either indirectly attracted through flirting or not). As a man, you can choose who to hit on. Conclusion: we have a much broader set in which to choose our gf/mate/fwb.

This isn't entirely a man/woman type of situation. It's more of a attractive/not attractive situation. The more attractive and socially skilled person always leads, while the less attractive and socially skilled person follows. Whether the more attractive person is a man or a woman depends on the situation. Also, within individual relationships, the roles can switch, so that sometimes the woman leads and the man follows and sometimes the man leads and the woman follows.
