Picking up strangers you present to them what you want them to see. When you know people well they get to see much more of you - even the bits that you wouldn't necessarily want them to.

Girls who know you have more insight into your less attractive traits.

Maybe you treat them differnetly too.

You can look at gaming women in your circle of friends as lower or higher risk. It's all in how you frame it. For most people, it's much easier to game friends and social circle (warm approach) than cold approaching.

It's Cialdini's principle of consistency (one of the six principles of influence). Our brain is hard-wired to make our behavior consistent -- especially on a person-by-person basis. So if your initial interactions, feelings and words with a woman are strictly platonic, it is difficult to truly be seductive with that same person. With a stranger, you have no previously established interactions, so it's easier to be a seductive person.

Same rule from the woman's perspective. If you behave one way for a year or two and then flip a switch and start trying to seduce her, it will freak her out.

Also explains the situation where you break up with a girl and then try to be friends. Exes almost always end up fucking eventually.
