Evolution. Women aren't shy per-se, they're risk-averse. They don't want to be seen as responsible for anything that could cause them problems later. This isn't just humans, in most animals the female is the play-it-safe sex while the males take the risks.

They are not “shy” per se. It is years of being “taught” how to behave. I think mostly societal expectations of how a woman should behave. Whereas not a lot of judgment is placed on men.

I’ve been around many women who were not shy because they were emotionally engaged in a convo with a calm confident person. Maybe try telling a short funny story that they can engage with instead of having just a list of questions. When women are unsure of your intent and level of confidence they may not be responsive in the way you want.

Also lots of women have lots of great reason to avoid whatever contact with strange men in most situations. Turns out we men are sometimes violent creeps and we need to be better. Some women are violent creeps too but the stats that I’ve read and women who have told me stories are pretty clear that it’s not on the same level
