I'm a divorced dad living in Ottawa County, Michigan. Been divorced 7 years and remarried for almost 4. I'm considering starting up a side hustle that may be temporary or irregular income (I won't know until I see if I'm happy with it, and even then it may only be a few gigs in any year). I'm not trying to be in contempt of court over not reporting a change of employment (like my ex has) but I'm also hoping to avoid getting slapped with a radically greater child support obligation than necessary as my current wife does not work outside of the home. So my questions are: At what point do I report that I have taken up a side job? Are we looking at the point of forming any business license, any time that we sign up to do a Lyft/Uber type of thing, or when I actually start making an income from that side hustle? If the expected income from the secondary job would not even elevate me above the officially defined "significant increase in income" threshold do I even have to report it?
