Let's talk about office dress codes

I once had a temp job where I got called in to the boss's office and (politely, to be fair) lambasted for wearing shorts on "casual" Friday- by a woman a third of my size, who was wearing a skirt that showed off more skin than I'd been. Not a higher proportion- MORE. And on a NON-casual day, no less. When I pointed that out (literally, using a finger and cleared throat), she blushed- but just repeated "We can't allow shorts".

I was debating getting a similar skirt and just wearing that, but they fired me before I got a chance.

Here's a related thought: even seen the US Capitol building? It's old and huge, and I'll bet it costs a fortune to heat and cool (Washington DC is hardly the Deep South, but it DOES get pretty hot). How much money could be saved if our politicians dressed for the weather? How much energy is being wasted to accomplish what could be done with a simple pair of shorts?

If you’re gonna talk about office dress code, can’t leave out the air conditioning policy. Women freeze, in part, because they choose lighter clothes while men are required to wear warmer clothing. If men could dress less formally, the office conditions could be warmed up a bit.

Judges will throw male lawyers out of courtrooms if they're not wearing a full suit and tie. Women can go jacketless, sleeves, tieless/baring cleavage, and wear skirts.

My personal opinion is that front office and public facing roles should be wearing a well-fitting, dark suit on any days that the public will be in the office.

Back office should be casual, long pants with collared shirts that fit properly. On days that the public isn't in the office, the front office should be allowed the same. Women shouldn't have special rules: dark, full length pants and collared shirts. Unless there is a religious exemption, no skirts. Only visible flesh allowed should be hands and face.

At offices I've worked in women can wear anything. Casual attire, shorts, shirt shorts, tank tops, halter tops, mini skirts, even bare midriffs.

Men: Dreas shirts and dress pants.

All genders should be stressing equally formally

Are you implying that women shouldn't be allowed to dress like that at work? I'm against dress codes for both men and women.

I've never encountered this. Every office environment I have been a part of has expected women to wear a shirt or blouse that covers the neck down (long or short sleeves) and long pants or ankle length or longer skirts. Knee length skirts, shorts, an exposed midriff, a sleeveless top, or anything of the like would have gotten a discussion about wardrobe.
