As someone who's lived in major cities all my life - I can say that having someone walk behind me at night makes me uncomfortable regardless of gender, and I'm a dude. Its just assumed that if they're too close to you at night...that they're up to no good. Its not bad to think like this, especially for women in urban areas (because women are weaker and slower than men, they're often better targets for muggings)..I tell my female co-workers not to walk home alone or to their cars alone at night, and I think its warranted advice.

Maybe if you live in a nice little town this would be a weird reaction...but not in a city.

Tough call here. Not sure who to side on. The comment about the black person really hit it home for me that it was sexist, though.

I agree that it is sexist, but I also agree that it may be a reality. Attackers on the streets are more often male. It would have been nice if the person didn't include gender in their post and just said "anyone walking behind me" (albeit someone in a high heel wouldn't scare anyone because they are easily put off balance).

We actually don't consider all men predators, but the risks are just not worth it. I often get off work late, sometimes after 3:00am and walk or ride my bike home. I know that as a woman walking around late at night, I could be seen as a target. I walk fast, stick to well lit, populated streets and I carry pepper spray all in the interest of keeping myself safe. If someone (person, male or female) were following behind me I would try to get away from them, not because I think that they're going to rape me or mug me but because I don't even want to risk it. Of course I know that most men are good men and would never harm me, but when my options are to either make my self feel safe and possibly avoid being attacked vs. not hurting your feelings, I'm going to take the former.

You don't need to make it worse than it really is. It's bad enough as it stands.

Female thanks men for acknowledging that most men are predators, and avoiding women to reduce the stress their presence causes.

Perhaps as another friendly gesture, we can walk around in handcuffs and chastity belts to show that our intentions are not evil. In fact, I might go make that point.

OK let me lay this out for you.

Women are afraid of being raped (we can discuss the reasons elsewhere). And fear stops the rational mind, ie you can't think when youre afraid. Therefore, women are going to be wildly inconsistent/inconsiderate when they are alone and afraid while walking somewhere.

This is why women talk about 'secretly' tailing a guy or group of people they feel safe with, and at other times talk about not wanting a guy to walk behind them (which also might be safer for them in another situation).

There's no use making sense of it, it's just how individuals feel in specific situation when they are afraid. Also, she does have disclaimer in there essetially admitting she is probably being irrational.

The point about egalitarianism is that it doesn't matter if a given group has a higher incidence of X. Statistical observations do not apply to individual instances, and so treating any given individual as though they are X - without empirically determining it - is Bad and Wrong.

You treat people equally, regardless. Yes, it's hard to do. But the payoff for society as a whole is worth it.
