Polygamy rarely works out well...

It can work from a strategy point of view, but it is a disaster from a societal point of view.

Think about what it means...... Almost certainly (if history is a guide) an elite of guys will grab all the women, almost certainly older and more successful guys who can support multiple women.... This creates an underclass of 50-60% of the male population, young, strong, wild, aggressive and absolutely driven up the wall by years of sexual frustration. They also face the prospect of years more frustration ahead before they can snag that first wife.

Then some stupid fucker with an unusual brain state gets up and says "Jihad ! Burn the Heretics ! Persecute the unbelievers !" and the young, strong and wild 50-60% of the male population goes nuts letting their aggression and sexual frustration out on anyone who doesn't wear the right kind of funny hat.

Doesn't have to be religious, red scares are fine, Jews might get it, might be religious, maybe the right gets framed as nazis, who knows.

Seriously, nuclear families are a stable sexual strategy and also a stable societal strategy. It's why they're been so successful.

I wouldn't want to get caught in a polygamous country wearing the wrong sort of hat.

My atheist hat is going to stick out like a sore thumb for starters.

Then I have to start wondering what political colour my hat is.

Then whether it comes in the right racial fabric.

Rather have the young guys getting laid. That means stopping the rich older guys from hoovering up most of the market so the 18 year olds get some sort of shot.

That's, basically, what anti-polygamy laws are trying to prevent.

Don't get me into the kind of crazy laws the rich old men start introducing into the legislature in order to help them protect their large harems while he is at work.

"Hey, you know what would be awesome ? If we made it illegal for women to drive. Fuck, that sounds like an awesome idea. 500 biggest harem owners in the country, representatives, yes you same guys, who's with me ? Oooh, 499 of you. Nice. Passed"

It's a nice personal strategy. Have nothing against people pursuing it on an individual basis. There are going to be some big problems on a societal basis with it.

It should not because it fucks with the children's minds.

I know maybe YOU want to be apple of the eye of multiple (beta) men, but normal people think of their own children.

It shouldn't because if it would upset the fabric of society. And by this I mean seriously upset it. As things are, even societies that allow polygamy (f.ex. the Arabian Peninsula), monogamy is still the norm for the majority of the population, so we can assume that even these countries have sort of a monogamy culture for the common folk.

That said, I would be really curious how it would pan out if polygamy was fully accepted socially and we also didn't have a monogamy-oriented culture (which would basically burn down to women having made their peace with the idea that it's okay to share a great guy and that they can't expect exclusiveness), i.e. how many women would actually sign up for this.

I am not interested in the societal consequences, these I can imagine by myself (if individual men would monopolize several women each, and this would apply society-wide so it affects more than just a small share of the population, this would certainly serve to fester civil unrest among the have-nots), but really in seeing whether the desire for exclusiveness or the willingness to not call the tune with a guy would prevail.

Because we humans can be pretty damn jealous. Not to mention that you will get even more men "pissed", as this really only benefits women more.

I'm not here to CYV. Just commenting because I thought it was a coincidence that I was just talking about this issue. I completely agree that there is no legal reason that the (American) government should forbid plural marriage. If two consenting adults can be married, then why not three or four or five? The only reason it's banned is that most major religions look poorly on that kind of relationship. Though the US is supposed to be governed without the input of the Church, it is too heavily ingrained in society for the US to break free of it.

This is a good and important discussion. I'm excited to read replies!

My issue with polygamy isn't the fact that a man has multiple wives, its the age difference between the husband and the wife. In many polygamist societies, thirteen year old girls are forced to marry much older men, in their forties and beyond. Then they are forced to have sex with them and have their babies. To me, it is disgusting to force your young daughter into getting pregnant so young by such an older man.

I don't have a problem with polygamy as a lifestyle, but our family court system is set up with the core idea that there are two parties to a divorce or custody hearing. Adding a third party would lead to a huge legal morass as many decades of law has to be re-written or (more likely) re-interpreted by judges who know very little about the dynamics of polygamous relationships.
