Moderating a subreddit is a thankless job, let alone a bag of snakes like this one. Complaining about the mods here is like getting a free sandwich and then bitching that there are pickles on it.

It would be nice if there was some warning. I'm unaware my comments are being removed and if I don't hear from mods I think I'm OK, then I got a three dayban, which is fine, I deserved it, but I would have turned it down earlier if there was some warning

Just wanted to say that this is a really draining job as is. It can be difficult to handle each comment with the care it deserves. We do our best. Maybe we need more mods.

femradebates has an amazing mod system.

They have a seperate sub where they crosspost all users transgressions and mod actions so people can A) see who's being an asshole and B) see what mods are assholes.

If a user is punished, the whole community can see why and agree that the mods were doing a good job, and if the community regularly does not agree, then the community gets to see that the mods are doing a bad job, or are being unfair/bullies and are socially shamed for it.

There was a post a couple days ago about feminism and the female feminist moderator went through and deleted a bunch of posts she didn't like. Not cool.

I think this every subreddit should do this. It cuts down on the autocracy inherent in the Reddit mod system. I think it's ridiculous that moderators are basically gods.

Another option that some subs do is posting the specific rule that was violated when a comment is removed, or a user banned. I think it's silly this sub shadow-deletes comments and the user has no idea their voice went unheard.

I think using a system (don't crucify me for the suggestion!) like /r/askwomen or /r/askhistorians where they have form responses to removing comments could be helpful. Just a quick copy/paste and it's gone. If they want to argue over it, it can be moved to modmail.

Otherwise, people won't know that they're crossing lines, and then they can't moderate their own behavior.

If you're going to delete or shadowban comments, could you at least put a message on the thread (or via PM to the author) indicating who deleted the comment and specifically why?

This is much easier said than done, and some of us are better about it than others. I am not great about it, because it's extremely time consuming. I also get sick of dealing with the arguments and personal insults that inevitably result from telling people their comments have been deleted.

Maybe we need to add more mods if this is the user consensus.

While I'm at it, I really don't understand the policy of shadowbanning individual comments. It is not documented anywhere on PPD that I can see and yet it has happened to me several times. What is the difference that leads to a comment being shadowbanned rather than deleted?

It's not possible to shadowban a comment. We can only remove comments. Reddit just makes it difficult for users who have a deleted comment to realize it's been removed. I think because it's easier to deal with spammers if they don't know if their comments are being deleted.

The moderation here is shit and gets worse all the time. I recommend you just abandon the board if you take it as anything more than the bad joke it is.

Shadowbanned comments left and right that don't even break the stated rules of the board, but just contains something one of the assholes here don't like, impossible to ascertain what.
