Don't worry guys. She did well on the academic portion. She will at least know the science of why the burning building collapsed with people in it while she was too busy trying to catch her breath.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Her test you may ask yourself?

_______ can't ____ steel beams.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ring of fire, burn burn burn

[–]Pyroscout2238 points 11 years ago [recovered] (6 children) | Copy Link

sniff sniff

You smell that? That's the smell of a lawsuit in the works. Great to know where the priorities lie. Let's just put the lives of other firefighters and civilians at risk, as well as demolish the precedent that was set when there are women who actually passed the test, just because a gender quota needs to be filled.

[–]asaasa198328 points 11 years ago [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

United Women Firefighters, an organization of FDNY women, objects to the FST test, contending it unfairly bars females.

Seems like whatever they do they're in deep shit.

But hey, feminism is supposed to be about equality...

[–]bunnymud 27 points28 points29 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

Instead of raising the bar for females by hitting the gym and getting stronger so they would pass the test they lower the bar for women by forcing the FD to lower their standards under threat of lawsuit. Remember that whenever you hear the word "Equality" it's never about raising the bar, but more about lowering it.

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points29 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

No matter how hard they hit the gym, only a handful of women would ever be able to pass the test.

Instead of admitting that strength is a needed part of the job, and that men are stronger than women, they'd rather pretend it is arbitrary sexism.

Harrison Burgeron was not meant to be an instruction manual...

[–]bunnymud 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

And yet, here we are.

[–]mrheh 37 points38 points39 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Back in 2007 she also forced the city to raise the age limit for recruitment She's a huge pain in the ass for the city and this is not the last we are going to hear from her.

[–]crackyJsquirrel 23 points24 points25 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

What an asshole. "These rules set for the safety of the public should not apply to ME. WAH WAH WAH". Wtf, how is it OK to sacrifice the public's safety for the feels of one person?

[–]why-this 33 points34 points35 points 11 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

I remember years ago, i went through the fire academy. There was one female in the whole class. All the way up to the final physical test, we all knew she wouldnt make it. We did numerous practice runs, and she never came close. She always would quit halfway through and start sobbing. Day of the finals came. Low and behold, she doesnt complete the course. The director of the academy declared that she would get a second opportunity, in private, because the pressure of her peers watching was too much and thats why she couldnt perform. She graduated with us and is now a city firefighter. I never landed a department job due to having too many speeding tickets. So yeah, this article makes me a little fucking salty.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points19 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

The director of the academy declared that she would get a second opportunity, in private, because the pressure of her peers watching was too much and thats why she couldnt perform. She graduated with us and is now a city firefighter.

Probably got his dick sucked.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

the pressure of her peers watching was too much and thats why she couldnt perform

How the fuck is she going to be able to perform during an actual fire then?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Funny because I used that same excuse when I tried to make it as a porn star.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

BTW, it's good to see you out and about on Reddit again. :D

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Cheers man! I'm doing so much better these days.

[–]lewd_crude_dude 8 points9 points10 points 11 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link

No but seriously, why is it always "pressure of her peers?" They say the same thing about women math and science scores, and that they don't reflect their actual scores due to pressures and anxieties.

http://www.apa.org/research/action/stereotype.aspx

it's become clear that negative stereotypes raise inhibiting doubts and high-pressure anxieties in a test-taker's mind, resulting in the phenomenon of "stereotype threat."

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because personal responsibility is for losers.

[–]NotTheLittleBoats 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

the pressure of her peers watching was too much and thats why she couldnt perform

Make sure to update us when she blames her coworkers' judging for why she got a bunch of them killed at a fire. (The men's deaths will help to reduce the gender imbalance in the fire department!)

[–][deleted] 73 points74 points75 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Oh ok, lets put someone who can't perform 100% of the functions in a life or death job so their feefees don't get hurt. Genius.

[–]Kernes 38 points39 points40 points 11 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

We need some feminist firefighters team, that will go to feminists calls only.

[–]ZohanDvir 29 points30 points31 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

They'd probably try and convince the fire it was part of the patriarchy instead of extinguishing it

[–]Kernes 12 points13 points14 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Or they just skip it, if they are not in the mood

[–]JakeDDrake 28 points29 points30 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

"It's not my job to educate you about Fire Safety, shitlord!"

[–]denart4 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

political correctness..

[–]solbadguy0308 49 points50 points51 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

She is endangering her coworkers lives.

[–]Ultramegasaurus 22 points23 points24 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Also her own. And the lives of the people the fire brigade is supposed to help.

[–]DontGetCrabs 14 points15 points16 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I'm stupid and don't know much of the law, also I hate how sue happy our nation is. ALTHOUGH I would be trying to sue the city for potentially endangering my family.

[–]hork23 15 points16 points17 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Political correctness yet again trying to get people killed.

[–]TutkuGulzar13 points 11 years ago* [recovered] (11 children) | Copy Link

Similar thing is going on in Sweden. You probably already figured out that it is not doing well, for the people

[–]jeegte12 9 points10 points11 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

I didn't figure that out; don't know anything about Sweden. How is feminism over there?

[–]Waldhuette 6 points7 points8 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Like the finest selection from tumblr. It's probably hard to find more extreme ones.

[–]Kestyr 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Example 1

[–]Erotic_Abe_Lincoln 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

Jesus Christ, when did the vikings become such pussies?

[–]Kestyr 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's been a gradual decline since Swedish neutrality during WW2

[–]snell_kille2 points 11 years ago* [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Being "neutral" was kind of a pussy ass move in the first place

[–]Kestyr 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh it was completely. "Neutrality" of course being letting the Nazis walk through your country and invade your neighbor. They were a bunch of sell out cunts.

[–]fyreNL 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Man,I call myself a pacifist, but, this is as stupid as it gets. If the police can't stop the rioters, who will? They're just going to feel invincible and only make things worse.

[–]Kestyr 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Police don't take action, when they do things like rapists get a year in the slammer, murderers seven years. Crime isn't taken very seriously in Sweden and it's no surprise that the right wing is becoming more established as time goes on.

[–]berger77 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Umm... Not really good example. It might be better to have the riot fizzle down then throw police in the mix. Car on fire wasn't going to cause any other issues.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Sweden

Why am I not surprised?

[–][deleted] 86 points87 points88 points 11 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

Look up Kara Hultgreen. Navy and Airforce were competing to see who could get the first female pilot or something. The navy gave her her wings despite failures in training. She ended up crashing her plane. They told her she was ok to fly when she wasn't. They killed her. This shit has to stop.

[–]asaasa198360 points 11 years ago [recovered] (11 children) | Copy Link

No sorry, SHE killed herself. And in doing so damaged public property for millions.

She knew she didn't passed the test. She knew she was not as competent as her male teammates. SHE still decided to get inside the plane cockpit and fly that damn airplane.

We, as a society, need to stop blaming other people for women problems. Not only did she kill herself but in doing so she destroyed the credibility of having female pilots. Sure now there are some but it gave a bad reputation to female pilots which they are still struggling to get over.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points39 points 11 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

If I failed some tests but the military still told me I was ok to fly, then I'd reckon I was ok to fly.

[–]asaasa198323 points 11 years ago [recovered] (9 children) | Copy Link

I seriously doubt it. Most people are able to self-analyse. It's easy for you to say this right now because your life is not in danger. But would you go drive a formula 1 at 300km/h if you failed your driving license? (I mean the actual driving part, there's no stop sign on a racing course!)

(...)despite receiving low scores from her instructors and having four "downs" or indicators of an unsatisfactory performance (one or two of which usually can end an aviation career).

Let me get this straight: You get FOUR red flags during your training, two of them should see you BANNED from flying. Your other grades are low. This is not she did 59 on a test which she needed a 60 on. This is she totally fucked up ALL of her training, she was not that poor kid in grade 12 that tries to get the passing grade and ends up begging the teacher for a few bonus points. She was the kid who did not follow since grade 6, nothing got better yet got handed a diploma with: well you're the first vagina we had here so it counts as a 10 points bonus.

Let me get this straight now: You know you're going into a dangerous (life threatening) job. You are asked to do things to prove you are good to do. You fail systematically all of those. Someone tells you four MAJOR errors you made, someone else said: just by doing this and that you'd get yourself killed. Yet you would say: ah brush that aside, what does those people who pretty much invented the whole subject knows, I know myself, I'll ace that shit when comes the time.

I know it's hard to do, but you ARE giving her a pussypass right now. Blaming the navy instead of her. The navy never told her she got passing grades when she didn't. She was supposed to be smart enough to either re-take the classes or apply for another position in the army.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

That's a pretty good argument, you've sold me. She should have taken responsibility for her own life.

I don't think that takes all the responsibility off of those instituting sexist policies though.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 11 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

Playing devil's advocate- you have no idea what they told her or did not tell her. Perhaps they downplayed the importance of the grades and promised to start off slow with basic trainer aircraft and work her way up when she's "more capable" to faster aircraft. It seems as though that's exactly what they did, actually, and this;

she totally fucked up ALL of her training

Isn't true.

Upon graduation (ranked third of seven in her class) she was assigned to Training Air Wing FOUR at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi, Texas for primary flight training with VT-27 in the T-34C Turbomentor. Screened for the Strike Pilot training pipeline, she underwent follow-on training in the T-2C Buckeye and TA-4J Skyhawk II with Training Air Wing THREE at NAS Chase Field, Texas. Following designation as a Naval Aviator, she received orders to fly EA-6A Prowlers with Tactical Electronic Warfare Squadron THIRTY-THREE (VAQ-33) at NAS Key West, Florida. Upon the Navy's integration of women in combat in 1993, LT Hultgreen was selected to be among the first female pilots to undergo F-14 Tomcat training at NAS Miramar, California.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kara_Hultgreen

I'm guessing if they were that desperate to push her through, they were probably quite manipulative about it as well. It's not the equivalent of failing a driver's test and then being putting in a formula 1 car. She didn't go from multiple choice tests to the F-14 overnight. Even today pilot's don't start out on F-22s. After flying a number of hours on trainer aircraft and less powerful aircraft, they probably built up overconfidence in her and told her she was ready for the F-14- and she wasn't.

Edit: For the record, I'm not entirely excusing her, but if you're saying the government has no blame here, you're wrong.

[–]asaasa19836 points 11 years ago [recovered] (5 children) | Copy Link

Thanks for putting context and playing devil's advocate. You do put up some good points.

I think we can settle down to the whole thing being quite a mess brought by overeager military personnel and overconfident person not realising how dangerous the situation would be.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

It's cool- it's easy to forget the role of overconfidence, especially when you have people building it up each step of the way. How many bad drivers are absolutely positive that they are the good drivers and everyone else sucks? The people who bomb a test and say it was a mistake?

Imagine someone encouraging them for years and then giving them a Ferrari.

[–]asaasa19833 points 11 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

Yeah overconfidence is a bitch. Everyone is asking me why I'm always a pessimist and no matter how much I explain no one will understand that I'm not a pessimist I just want to stay grounded and realise that things will not go as well as I imagine them. It's like people never question their judgment and think they are qualified for any and everything.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah, every thread has people being corrected, and corrections being corrected. Intuitions are often wrong and we're too lazy to look at the numbers and fact check often times. Notable psychologist and Nobel Prize winner Daniel Khaneman demonstrates how lazy we are when asking the question:

“How many animals did Moses take into the Ark?”

Most people would confidently say "two", instead of realizing the problem was that it was Noah's Ark. Overconfidence, poor intuitions, and laziness all tie into one another.

[–]hiphopapotamus1 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Civil discussion? on Reddit? I'm impressed.

[–]Joelasaur 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah I posted about that in another thread about this topic here.

Here was some of the background provided: http://econfaculty.gmu.edu/wew/articles/95/costly-affirmative-action.htm

[–]Vwyx 3 points4 points5 points 11 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

That's not what happened.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Well shit. Thanks for the info.

Now I'm wondering if OP's article is being sensationalized too. Are there any male firefighters who also failed that one test?

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points7 points 11 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Unless the article is outright lying, then no. It specifically says:

The FDNY for the first time in its history will allow someone who failed its crucial physical fitness test to join the Bravest, The Post has learned.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Oh. I didn't re-read it.

[–]bunnymud 10 points11 points12 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I guess she doesn't mind being treated differently.

Enjoy being the token, toots.

[–]Mrlord997 points 11 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link

As somebody that works in the Emergency Response field.. This is stupid. To perform the job requires lifting heavy ladders, humping heavy hose lays, and if the need comes to it, drag a person or fellow crew member out of a burning building. I wouldn't want anybody next to me in that inferno that I couldn't count on to pull me out if need be. They wouldn't let a man get the job because he couldn't pull his weight and pass the physical test. Why should they let a woman do the job that can't pass the test?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because they have it in their retarded little heads that this is what it means to be equal

The problem with lowering your standards is no one ever really defines how low is too low.

[–]french_toste 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She gonna die

[–]french_toste 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I would not trust her if she was on my team. The functional skills test makes sure that you're physically able to perform your job. If I get whacked in the head and go down, and she can't pull me out of the building, I'm gonna die. I don't want to die. Dying is bad for fireman.

[–]french_toste 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While I think diversity is important, those fitness tests are there for a reason, and unless you can show the tests are designed to discriminate against women, this should not be controversial.

If her academic scores are so good, there must be another way she can serve within the FDNY besides carrying a 200lb man out of a flaming building, right?

[–]Dickensheets 0 points1 point2 points 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well the solution is obvious, we just have to start setting more gender-equal fires.

[–]autotldr -1 points0 points1 point 11 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This is the best tl;dr I could make, original reduced by 90%. (I'm a bot)

Wax's graduation comes as the city celebrates the FDNY's 150th anniversary and as the department is under pressure by the de Blasio administration to hire more women.

Wax had previously received another break to join the FDNY after pleading in June 2011 for a City Council bill that raised the age limit from 29 to 35 for applicants like her who first took the entrance exam in 2007.

Nigro, questioned by The Post during an FDNY anniversary celebration at a Midtown firehouse Saturday, refused to comment on Wax's fitness failure.

One has to wonder what a massive whining cunt this one is when she can get the age limit raised from 29 to 35? Holy shit, who's in that kind of shape at 35 unless they are one awesome specimen to begin with? I can see someone in spectacular shape for that age getting a pass, but a fat bitch, seriously???

Why hasn't this been taken to some court and the city sued for lowering standards and endangering lives? Why isn't the FD going on strike in protest? Why isn't their union going apeshit over it?
