• The survey that this study is based on was done in 1995

• Out of 10,847 women between the ages of 15 and 44 that responded (79% response rate), 4884 women that were married for 13+ months were interviewed twice

• The ethnicity of these 4884 women were 85.8% White, 6.8% Black, 4.0% Asian, 0.4% American Indian, 0.1% multiracial, and 2.3% other; 0.5% of the sample did not respond to the question asking about race.

• Participants had been married an average of 10.55 years (SD 6.66, range 1–29).

Because most people view inﬁdelity unfavorably, the assessment of inﬁdelity is likely to be inﬂuenced by social desirability and impression management: The socially desirable response would be to deny that one has engaged in inﬁdelity to avoid shame or embarrassment and to conform to perceived social norms. Therefore, prevalence estimates for inﬁdelity are likely to vary depending upon how much they are inﬂuenced by social desirability. For example, social desirability effects are likely to be large in a face-to face interview relative to an anonymous self-report questionnaire, thereby likely resulting in lower prevalence rates of inﬁdelity in the interview format relative to the questionnaire format.

So the prevalence of infidelity is probably under-reported in this study.

While the incidence of infidelity increased by 7% (or 13% depending on the survey), I have to wonder what the baseline rate of infidelity is to begin with. (Let me explain.) They claim a lifetime infidelity rate in the beginning of the paper (20%-25% for women). But, there were four factors that are big ones for infidelity.

According to the data, the biggest factors are (note there were two modes of interviews, so there's two different percentages):

Childhood sexual abuse (increases chances of infidelity by 344% or 192% -- 268% average).
Premarital cohabitation (increases chances of infidelity by 416% or 47% -- 231% average).
Being black (increases chances of infidelity by 235% or 152% -- 193% average).
Being remarried (increases chances of infidelity by 109% or 86% -- 97% average)
Per sexual partner (increases chances of infidelity by 13% or 7% -- 10% average). (Or, to put it another way, for every 10 sexual partners: 130% or 70%).

Obviously, there might be some correlations involved (e.g. someone who was sexually abused might be more likely to have more sexual partners than someone who wasn't sexually abused). It would be interesting to see how those factors drop out. (I'm assuming they didn't do a regression.) For example, if women who were abused as children have 10 more sexual partners than women who were not abused, then we'd see a correlation between infidelity and number of sexual partners, but what's going on is that infidelity and number of sexual partners is correlated to the third factor (sexual abuse). This would mean "number of sexual partners" in itself would have lower correlation to infidelity than the reported 7% (or 13%).

Getting back to the question of the "baseline" rate of sexual infidelity, if being black, remarried, cohabitation, and sexual abuse are such big factors, then the "baseline" (for someone who is none of those things) might be quite low to begin with.

To compare risk factors for infidelity, you could say:

(Childhood sexual abuse) is equivalent to (no sexual abuse + 27 sexual partners)
(Premarital cohabitation) is equivalent to (no-cohabitation + 23 sexual partners)
(Being black) is equivalent to (not-black + 19 sexual partners)
(Being remarried) is equivalent to (not remarried + 10 sexual partners)

Fantastic -- I always love hard data about stuff like this. Question for OP: do you have any more? Especially more recent (since this comes from 1995, I wouldn't be surprised if these results lowballed infidelity rates among women)?
