Lifting is not just about getting jacked. Lifting is a discipline. Getting up early, going to the gym when you really would rather lie in bed next to a naked sweaty girl takes discipline. Putting the donut down takes discipline. If you're jacked, you can't help but show that you have complete control over at least one aspect of your life. This control and discipline bleeds into your personality. You actually become a more confident, self-assured person. That's the kind of guy women want.
Dost thou even hoist?
Retard. 1000 crunches a day.Go swimming. Try jogging. Get a manicure, I've seen many more women in nail salons than gyms.

So you think that if you start to have a consistent workout schedule you would stop eating unhealthy?
You really think most guys are standing in line at krispy kreme? almost every guy i know already put at least an hour at the gym each day, usually at 5:30 after work. they might feel better about their life, but they are still staring at the hot girl in the gym shorts next to them, and still too afraid to approach her.
that increase level of confidence you talk about, doesn't seem to have enough activation energy to overcome social anxiety, since everyone these days are too busy staring at their smart phones, making the problem of social anxiety even worst. people actually become uncomfortable talking on the phone now in 2016, instead they prefer texting.

Lifting is really only one aspect. Regaining control of yourself and emphasizing masculinity. It is one tool not a complete toolbox. If you don't address the underlying anxiety then that is all anyone will see, and while you're still stuck in your own head someone eventually will approach.
Hell I've seen it at the gym, dudes in great shape scared to talk to a girl they see there regularly - even when SHE attempts to start the conversation.
At the end of the day I don't hit the gym to look good for someone else, I hit the gym, punish some muscles and leave feeling great - and most of all not caring what anyone thinks while I'm there.

Do you always decide whether or not something is worth doing based on whether or not it will improve your chances with women?
Pretty sad, OP.
Regardless, I'm fairly certain if given a choice between a strong, muscular you, and a wimpy, noodly you, a woman will pick the muscular you nearly 100% of the time. And if you actually think you can get a "swimmer's physique" by just doing some crunches and swimming, I have some bad news for you.

I was a competitive swimmer in highschool. When I started lifting (crossfit) i was already swimming twice a day most days. it made me go from loosing every race to making the state relay team. It's really a variety of training

Brilliant essay. Truly a masterpiece if I say so myself. Let me expand on your logic and highlight other things that are useless because they do not directly contribute to the acquisition of women.
Eating Vegetables

You just used the common internet trick called Straw Man's Argument, a type of reductio ad absurdum corollary. You extended my arguments too far to make it too extreme, to try to disprove my point.
Any person reading my claim with average intelligence realizes that I am calling for a middle-path, non-extreme approach. Don't push too far, and don't overdo it.
Any point or claim a person makes when you extend it to the extreme, and try to apply it to other non-related areas will obvious break down and not make any sense.
I caught you trying to do that and I know that little trick. Don't do that again :)
[–]ShamwowTseDung1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (1 child) | Copy Link
You extended my arguments too far to make it too extreme, to try to disprove my point.
I read a post about how keeping yourself physically fit (through one of many ways) is a waste of time, solely because it will not immensely increase attraction from the opposite sex. That was no mere reduction, you've written something quite similar in your opening paragraph:
So many guys on here think that working out a lot at the gym will help dramatically improve a guy's chances with getting females' attraction.
Your argument may be sound, but there were some extreme ideas involved. I mean that quite literally- you have, also in your opening paragraph:
Before schwarznegger came along in the 70s, the entire idea of lifting didn't really exist.
You don't have to read history books, or Arnold's own autobiography- anyone who can read Wikipedia will know that this is bunk.
Another extreme idea being that lifting weights should only be considered by those interested in attracting members of the opposite sex (or the same, who am I to judge in 2016).
I'm going to speak my opinion, and say that you've misunderstood what you've gleaned from the advice about lifting. It's not your fault, I could easily see where one could justifiably misinterpret the poor writings of another, to arrive at the aforementioned conclusion.
I won't claim to be of TRP, but I know self-improvement is a popular aspiration of many here. I think it'd be reasonable, to see how someone interested in taking care of themselves would be seen as more attractive and likeable to anyone.
But I could be making a fallacy (quite possibly more), or have below-average intelligence.
[–]Raptorbite[S] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I have no problem with self improvement, and actually fully believe in self improvement. I am just of the opinion that too many guy's go-to-move towards self improvement seems to start and ends with lifting.
That is the advice you people on theredpill have for all guy issues that is related to the difficulty of dealing with females. get dump? get back in the gym and lift. wife not respecting you? get back in the gym to make her all hot and bothered at your supposed great body. girls not reacting well to your approaches? get back in the gym to lift to make yourself have a better body.

Jesus Christ your schedule is packed. I'm a miner I work 8hrs a day, 1 hour drive there and back and I bust my ass at work. I usually only work out on my days off or when I had a moderately easy night at work. I couldn't imagine going to the gym 5x a week and doing martial arts and doing yoga.
Do you have a 40hr/week job? If not then I can completely understand doing all that.

It's only as tough as you make it. A lot of things you can rig up to make it easier but sometimes you gotta grab a sledgehammer and pound a 2 foot long 1inch bolt into a hole. Sometimes you have to shovel muck for hours.
Anyway, what do you do from home? What's your income like? I looked into working from home in the past but it seemed to me you'd have to put 70-80 hour weeks in, at least in the beginning, to make any kind of comfortable income.
For reference, I make 23 an hour and I consider that good enough for where I live. I'm not broke by any sense but I don't drive a hummer and own a $300k home.

That you are right about. I am just a little upset that the first piece of advice for any guy who is sort of down on their luck in terms of having success in their professional life, or personal life(aka dating/relationships) is always to go to the gym and start lifting.
It seems to me that lifting is just a cover, a mask of the real problems. Lifting doesn't help you get a promotion, or find a better job, or get girls (as you pointed out in your arguement), or make you a better father.
How will exercising translate to success in other areas of life? It usually doesn't, except you develop more muscle definition, and maybe a 6 pack. But those body changes are covered in clothing, which no boss or girl will see in a normal social setting and admire.

OP, there appears to be numerous half truths here. I will speak, having made this mistake, that lifting is indeed useless... On its own. I had made the mistake of constantly saying just 50 more lbs and girls will find me attractive. Untill one day, I'm benching 350, deadlifting 500, and I shit thee not, still a virgin. Yeah sure I was up 60lbs since I started, but I was still the same insecure frightened child I was before. Without application of game and social skills, lifting isn't that useful.
[–]Westernhagen2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
In short, lifting is necessary but not sufficient.
[–]Raptorbite[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
why lift at all? that is a rhetorical question of course, since I know all the reasons why so many teenage and young adult guys go to the gym, and subjectively speaking, they are valid. (it makes you feel good, feel confident, feel like you are reaching your goals, there is a testosterone boost, you have slightly better sex and performance, etc.) however, once you are older, and you realize just how little we actually have control over in terms of our body and life, you realize that lifting really doesn't improve your life as much as you think.
the people who play professional sports, who often are in the gym 5 hours a day usually will tell you this. "you can't outwork a bad diet".

Looking into OP's post history is pure comedic gold. Apparently his favorite sub is called Short. I'll just let that simmer.

so the correct response to discredit someone on reddit is to look through their history, and hope to find something that make them less of a person to respect. then bring it up, and rub their nose in it, and laugh at because you are looking for ways to discredit me not by actually looking at my arguement, but to attack me as a person. sure dude.
you guys realize that just by posting on here, i was immediately banned from many other subreddits. this place is a sink for all of the anger and negatively that men have towards females who think that lifting however would change their lives.
[–]Thomaskingo 2 points2 points2 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
actually looking at my arguement
You have no argument. Almost everything you've written in your OP about lifting is demonstrably false. Anyone who've regularly done compound lifts will see results. Short term lowering body fat percentage is easier than building muscle, and if you have some muscle mass already, lowering body fat percentage will make you look somewhat ripped. But... Abs on a skinny guy with twigs for arms and legs is like big tits on a fat women: it doesn't count. It's not sexy. You're still weak.
You don't really know anything about strength and conditioning. You suggest something as stupid as a 1000 crunches a day. Maybe if you had the spine to actually do anything to improve your body, then you would actually have tried this for yourself, but you obviously haven't. In this regard you fall short as well. If you ever did lift, then you'd know you could progressively overload you crunches, and thereby making the "workout" productive.
you guys realize that just by posting on here, i was immediately banned from many other subreddits.
Why should this matter?
this place is a sink for all of the anger and negatively that men have towards females who think that lifting however would change their lives.
Come again? Like the short sub is a sinkhole for all the guys, who think that being two inches taller would mean they suddenly became more attractive?
OK, OP. I've really taken a large steaming shit on top of you, and I think you deserved it. You don't lift. You have never lifted. You have no positive valuble life experience to back up you post. It is simply a rant stemming from you having an antipathy towards lifting. You might have gone to the iron temple for a period of time wasting away unproductively on the machines, but it's more likely, that the masculine atmosphere and the gym bunnies induces anxiety in you because you are so weak. I assume you entire op is an expression of you trying to hamster a necessity (I can't make gains) into a virtue (it's bad to make gains and better to be a skinny bitch).
Your shit post pisses me off to no end. You figuratively walked in here in TRP and shat on the floor. If you don't understand this, then read the fucking sidebar or refrain form shit posting again.
And as a closing note. If you can't handle abuse from anonymous strangers on the internet, then TRP is definitely not for you. Bye.

I speak through experience. Lifting does not always translate towards an improvement of all areas of your life. In fact the opposite may happen.
There is no doubt that exercise does cause the release of endorphins, which is one of the neurotransmitters that causes the brain to feel good. This means that there is an associative connection between exercise and feeling good. However, the time you spend (2 hours a day?) at the gym, means that you don't spend that time on developing the other areas of your life, which actually can move the actual needle of life.
I know that to be true for a fact because I spent 3 years at the local gym. Because I would tell my friends I can't go out with them to meet girls, I spent a large portion of my 20s at the gym, working out because it made me feel good about myself. My social circle didn't improve, and all that time I could have spent at work, building my resume, and working for promotions, are all wasted.
In fact, there is now evidence from scientific studies which show that if you are the type of person who enjoys going to the gym and lifting on a regular basis, you are probably of below average intelligence, because that is the main way you can get your brain "activated".
http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1359105314565827
All I am saying to you guys on theredpill is to not be like me, who wasted a huge part of his life in the gym. After 5 years of lifting, you are going to come out of that gym, maybe at 7% less body fat, but still in the same position at your job, still single, and not going to night classes to improve yourself, because all those hours you spent exercising stunted your ability to grow in the areas of life which actually counts.
[–]Thomaskingo 1 points1 points1 points 9 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link
Lifting does not always translate towards an improvement of all areas of your life. In fact the opposite may happen.
Lifting will improve your SMV greatly. It'll also change the way other people interact with you (if your gains aren't invisible with clothes on). You'll feel better and most people will become more confident. Another thing is, that if you've been passive for most of you life, then working out and building muscle will change your homonal levels for the better.
However, the time you spend (2 hours a day?) at the gym, means that you don't spend that time on developing the other areas of your life, which actually can move the actual needle of life.
Why the fuck would you train for more than an hour and also every day? What an ineffective waste of time. Three years experience my ass. If you really are so retarded, that you trained two hours a day six days a week, then you're probably too dumb to move that "needle" anyway. One hour a session max, three to four times a week. Either you're really stupid and did everything you could to waste as much time possible in the gym to make the least gains (I've known such guys) or else your full of shit.
I spent a large portion of my 20s at the gym, working out because it made me feel good about myself. My social circle didn't improve, and all that time I could have spent at work, building my resume, and working for promotions, are all wasted.
If you couldn't make gains in the gym with all that time supposedly invested, even though most others can sculpt the body of a Greek God with three years of dilligent working out, then you wouldn't be able to make these in other areas better any way. Most people, who go to the gym does, but not you.
First of all in this day and age it's possible to find studies that are "evidence" of all sorts of absurd conclusions. The same researchers would probably find, that the men most interested and active in getting their dicks wet, also had lower intelligence than average. You do definitely not wanna fall in that category. Another point of contention is, why do you even think the study is relevant. Even if it was correct, then it wouldn't change anything. Lifting would still raise SMV and be supremely beneficial. Also there is a difference between causality and effect. We don't send men to the gym, because it "activates" their brain, but because it's effective. The avarage red piller is already pretty far from the average gym goer. Thus your reference is irrelevant and only seems to serve to discredit lifting in itself.
All I am saying to you guys on theredpill is to not be like me, who wasted a huge part of his life in the gym
Don't worry about that shorty. We aren't.
After 5 years of lifting, you are going to come out of that gym, maybe at 7% less body fat
Based simply on how absurd this statement is, you obviously never lifted.
but still in the same position at your job, still single, and not going to night classes to improve yourself, because all those hours you spent exercising stunted your ability to grow in the areas of life which actually counts.
You are just full of excuses about why you're still a looser. You've probably wanted to change for a long time, but you've never really understood how. Eveything you write have this bluepill vibe. Everything you write screams to high heaven, that you don't really understand this forum.

Apparently op isn't aware of how most men lived before the last few decades. Most men did manual labor that would make most gym rats feel like pussies
[–]Raptorbite[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
you make think you are arguing against my point, but you are actually validating my point.
manual labor is much harder, and more effective than going to the gym, and you get results in terms of changing your body. but that is the type of job that will slowly degrade your body. your body becomes screwed up by the time you are in your 40s. that is why people in the western countries slowly moved away from manual labor work (aka blue collar jobs) because in the long term, manual labor is not good for one's health and longevity
[–]squidracer 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Your talking out of your ass.. First off, it's not like city boys have the option to go outside and chop firewood all day.. This is where the gym comes in.
It's not labor that breaks down the body, it's shitty western diets.. Most men my age (35+) are fat unhealthy slobs that suffer from far my health problems then active men. Know any old school farmers? Many of them get around quite well for being 80+ years old.
Also, most men your age probably has a wife, multiple kids, a mortgage to worry about, house repairs, medical bills, a few student loan payments from going to law school/business school, the stress of saving for their kids college, yard work, paying for having a couple of dogs as pets, etc. That is a LOT of responsibility and things to worry about.
Tell me something. Do you also have a wife, multiple kids, a house that you are trying to pay off, maybe some old business school or law school student loans, house repairs, bills to pay, etc.?
Most guys on theredpill are single (aka not married) and don't have any kids. they might have a house, and a dog though. of course a lot of them are digital nomads who ran off to live in thailand looking for a way to live through currency arbitrage.
It requires usually a person with amazing management skills to balance all of those areas in life. Often the most logical thing to do when you are fully responsible guy in his 30s with all of these adult responsibility is to drop one of those major factors in your life. The health one is the easiest to drop, so guys around 35 turn into overweight guys. I don't blame them, and if I was in their position, I would do the same thing. Life is already hard enough.
It is not that they don't want to stay thin and fit. It is that they have too much going on in their life to do that. You do know that people who make the best money in their fields (aka $3-5 Mil a year), like at Mckinsey, Goldman Sachs, Wachtell Lipton, orthopedic surgery often work 12-16 hour days? Then they have to think about their wives, their marriage, their finances, retirement account, portfolio, their kids, going to their kids soccer games and piano recitals, etc. They are too busy.
You however probably have a lot of time to workout and stay fit.

You do realize that lifting burns more calories than cardio, right?
Ever been felt up by a woman? When they awkwardly pretend to sort of stumble then proceed to run their hands up and down your arms and shoulders? Another good story is when I asked a female friend why suddenly I was getting all this attention. She clapped a hand on my shoulder and said "Its the shoulders!"
Having high testosterone is good for you and lifting boosts it.

High Intensity Cardio type exercise. Try doing full speed sprints until you reach 200m in distance, catching your breathe in between each set, with 10 burpees in between each interval. Add jumprope in there too. Plus, eat carbs at a minimal rate. Do maybe a total of 10 of these, for a total of 2K.

I don't know where this idea of lifting even came from. So many guys on here think that working out a lot at the gym will help dramatically improve a guy's chances with getting females' attraction. Before schwarznegger came along in the 70s, the entire idea of lifting didn't really exist. People would go swimming, riding their bikes, playing tennis, to stay in shape as adults. Nobody went "lifting".
The average adult wasn't fat back then. Times change, so does sexual strategy. Lifting did exist. Fucking Ben Franklin wrote about lifting weights, and we know humans did it going back thousands of years. Your post is mostly bullshit. 99.99% of the people here aren't taking $50,000 a year worth of gear like Ronnie Coleman.
I remember reading about Franklin's comments on the important of getting exercise. However, the act of shoveling a half ton of hay in your barn to feed your cows can be technically classified as exercise and "lifting". guys working for a moving company are also "lifting". Women who carry a gallon of water to their children in those African tribes are also "lifting". What you are referring to as "lifting" is just exercise, but for the people doing it, they call it "work".
When I use the word "lifting" to laugh at it, I am talking about the guy who pays $29.99 per month to go to his local LA Fitness to push up dumbbells, take a 10 minute break, and then doing a set of only 6 reps. That is what the modern man seems to call "working out" or "lifting". They are also ogling the hot 20 year old girls but are too scared to talk to them.

What do you think will happen to your shoulders when you lift and grow muscles?
[–]Raptorbite[S] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
After you stop growing taller, you start grower wider, specifically in your upper chest/shoulder region as the chest expands in your early 20s. That stops around the time you become 30. You will not be able to increase shoulder size anymore after that. The limiting part is actually how large your shoulder bone reaches, not how much more muscle fibers/tissue you can overlay on top of the scapula.
