You arrange marriages for all your progeny. Your 2 daughter move away to live with their new husband's family in 2 different bands/villages while your sons stick with you.

Now imagine there's a pandemic that wipes your whole band. You, your sons and their owns sons (your grandsons, that is) all die. Imagine the pandemic also reaches one of your daughters band and she dies. The only one that survived was one of your daughters that was in another band. This means that men were always more at risk of dieing simultaneously in greater proportion. While women, who were usually travelling wide and scattered arround more diverse areas didn't. So that's another explanation.

I might be very wrong with what I'm about to say but things don't really add up. For starters both male and females have the same genetic makeup all expect our sex chromosomes, where females have two X chromosomes and males have one X chromosomes and one Y . you have a 50% for a male or female child but out of all the possible outcomes 6/8 chromosomes are going be X. If Roy is saying that female sex chromosome are more common than male then yes he his right but not because of hypergamy but because females don't have the Y chromosome but rather they get Dad's X chromosome which is from his Mom.

If there are more women reproducing than men than that means that men had multiple wives.

Roy baumeister used a paper by jason wilder to make his point. That paper is invalid now. It was published in 2004. Then, the most recent male ancestor was thought to be younger than the most recent female ancestor. After a discovery in 2013 it's actually the reverse now.
