It seems like the "good" thing to do is simply do what most men men don't do to her. If a girl usually doesn't get complimented on her looks at all, you would stand out from most men by doing so, and vice versa.

Problem is that you wouldn't know how most men treat her, unless you are really good at cold reading her, determining her insecurity levels, and then inferring how often she gets complimented on her looks.

Personally, I'm not that into the extreme DENNIS-style system of "neg them until they're broken, then compliment them to build them back up."

On the other hand, I'd much rather play it cool, and reveal a great compliment after you've been talking and you've got something insightful and original to say. I think this is why Neil Strauss's cold reading stuff works on people - if you haven't heard the gambit before, it's original and interesting (and it's usually used as a scene to tell them something good about themselves). It's important to make sure they realize, too, that you're giving them a compliment, and you're a savvy guy for picking up on that thing.

To use an example, I'd much rather tell them "I love how much intellect you bring to 'passion x'. I haven't heard you 'do passion x', but I can tell by your enthusiasm you must be good." That beats "nice shoes" any day.

What I'd be more inclined to believe is that guys are always giving this girl compliments, but they're simply not registering as such because she's not interested. She isn't going to say "wow, that's so nice that you like my shoes", because odds are, she isn't in a frame to realize that guy is trying to compliment her.

Female here, just perusing... I work part-time at Sephora (just look it up if you dont know) and when a Georgous woman comes in I say kindly "I bet you get this all the time, but you are georgous!" Quite often the most beautiful women "dont get it all the time" and it feels good to hear it. hinthint*

The same way it feels good to hear someone tell you "That was a very good decision, I wish I thought of it first!"

Doesn't this go against the grain? I thought hot girls know they are hot so we're supposed to not compliment looks. Although you said cute, not hot... is that the diff?

Sidenote question: Where do you draw the line through complimenting and over-doing it? From what I've seen, most PUAs go very light on the comments so as not to seem too interested.
